Whats the inside scoop on the KAI Tyrade G-10 LEs

I just purchased one of these Kershaw Tryde (1850G10SW) they have about 5 models in g-10. Black, Tan, Orange, SW, BB. All limited to a an odd number being made. Some 125, others 900 etc. The knife is so well made and pleasing to the eye I figure there is some story to this. Now all this would not seem unusual accept for the price. It’s way more knife than you pay for and is practically a ZT without the bells and whistles.

I know some of you know. So spit it out. ;) Something about the blade not cosmetically up to speed for the high end Tryde is what I heard. (Fine by me :) .)
Just quarious,no conspiracys suggested.

Nope. If it were cosmetic they would have either scrapped them or blemmed them out. The G10 were just extras they had after all orders were filled. Kershaw has a long history of binging you great product for cheap when they have factory over runs of parts or materials. Another couple of excellent expamles are the Ti SG2 JYD II (extra SG2 from the Blur SG2 run) and the TI ZDP Mini Cyclone (Leftover ZDP from the leek run). Both of those were bought out at low prices for what they are and in odd numbers. Think about it.... they already have all the milling pretty much set up in the computer for the handles and baldes. They keep a certain amount of Ti on hand for other projects and they have left over "exotic" steels (SG2, ZDP and in this case already cut composite blades.

This practice of bringing these reasonably priced boutique runs keeps customers and whole-salers happy, bring instant marketing buzz with iconic, limited knives, and allows them to clear excess material from the accounting books. All big WINS.

No conspiracy.....just KAI bringing the love. Enjoy it.

Note: the blades on the G10s look different b/c as a cost saving measure the D2 was not etched like the titanium tyrade blades. Only cosmetic difference. Just thought I'd mention that.

Edit to add: The S60V Blur was another material over run special edition. IIRC they found some S60 in the back room and said, "hey, lets make some knives out of it 'cause we don't need a 500 lb. S60V paperweight.";) Many of those ended up being cosmetic blems and were sold as such.

I don't believe that's right. I remember Thomas saying on the Kershaw forum that these knives are made up from composite blades that were done for the original Tyrade, but that did not etch appropriately. To use the blades, they gave them the stonewashed finish rather than the etching and used a simpler G10 handle than the original Tyrade. In so doing, they've created perhaps the best large-knife value ever!

I believe this is correct, didn't pass QC for the original Tyrades. I have all four of the available G-10 versions and I will say they are indeed a great deal.

The orange bead blast and the black stone washed are my favorite of the bunch. :D

Other than the blade etch not having the contrast called for, there is nothing else wrong with the blade. I don't know how much the blade had to do with the high price of the ti Tyrade, but for the price you can find the G-10 Tyrades they are a heck of a deal! This blade has two high end steels and was the first composite blade Kershaw ever did, and boy did they do it right.:D:thumbup: As I posted in another thread, I like these so much I have two orange, two black, and two tan versions, with one of the tans' in my pocket as I type this. Excellent knives is all I can say. Until you hold one and feel it in your hand it is sorta hard to get an appreciation for it, but when you do hold it in your hand and feel and see the quality you have to wonder how Kershaw is selling the thing as expensively as they are.

I don't consider an incomplete etch to be a blemish when it is refinished. Kershaw could have simply blasted the blades and re-etched them. However, they decided to go with a cheaper blade finish by simply blasting or stone-washing them and not going to the added expense of etching. Follow my logic? The grinds are straight and the current finish is the desired finish for this run (the cheaper alternative).

Of course we all agree that they are great so what does it matter. ;)

Quote I pulled of the thread in the link T Schloz posted.

Ok, here is the deal, these blades originally didn't pass QC because the etching wasn't perfect on them. They were scheduled to go into the original Tyrades.

It's either this finish, bead blast them, or we scrap them.

As far as the scales, we have the G-10, the liners would be fairly easy. We could keep the price at a minimum this way, and still have top notch materials.

The G-10 Tyrades are heck of a knife for the price.

It seemed that Kershaw just took advantage of the situation with the blades and made lemonade out of lemons so to speak.

Thread needs pics......

Nice pick-up Condition_1. I've been very happy with the Black SW that switches places with my ZT0301 every so often.

Love mine.. great thread. Tan and Orange here.. would like to pick up a black at some point before all gone. A true value.

I knew it would be an interesting story. The Stone Wash is fantastic and the liners are hefty enough to be frame locks. The fit and finish just outstanding. Tip up/down homerun.

I never held one before ordering it. I Like the Lahar so much I figured I would take a shot for the cost they are selling for. It has the WOW factor the first time you see it.

I'm going to have to ask you guys to stop posting pictures now. I seriously want another one because something tells me I'm gonna baby this one. Your pictures are not helping me resist. SO STOP!!!:D

Just kidding, love the pics. I need another one. :o

OK, Now you have pushed me over the edge. I had to order another one.:p

I wonder if anyone knows if the ZT pocket clips fit this model?
They look like the same configuration.

Now you cooking!

I haven't tried the ZT clips, but I don't think they will as the holes in the Tyrade are spread wider, and are offset up and down.

ZT pocket clips will not fit either Tyrade for the reason that cutter explained.
