I'm in the market for a S30V steel blade but am short on cash so I'm wondering what the least expensive S30V steel knife is on the market today. Anything that is still in stock is fair game even if it's a recently discontinued knife. I'm thinking based on my internet research so far that the Kershaw Avalanche is the best quality and cheapest S30V knife I can get...Am I right?

buck vantage pro version. i don't think the other versions are s30v. i don't think stores have it in stock till next year though.

I got my Buck Vantage Pro and Spyderco Native for $40 each. The Native was on clearance at WalMart though after they had stopped carrying them. Between the 2 though, the Vantage Pro is a higher quality knife IMHO.

The Buck Vantage Pro without a doubt. It is the best S30V blade you can get and for the price tag it is a steal. I would buy 2 if I had the cash.

You may also want to check kershawguy's "kershaw factory blems" thread in the dealer for sale section... he has a couple of s30v models listed.

The Buck Vantage Pro or the Kershaw Avalanche. I have both and both are good knives though the Buck has been know for blade alignment issues while closed.

Careful, S30V can differ among makers due to the heat treat. If you want a really good blade, then you have to pay for it. Like the saying goes "you get what you pay."

Are you saying Buck and Kershaw don't know how to heat their blades?

I would have to agree the Buck Vantage Pro is a good value, I think they have the Paul BoS heat treat.

No, I'm sure they do. I don't have a Kershaw, but I'm not impressed with the Buck. Benchmades are ok (I only have one S30V blade from them, a Mini Rukus), but I think the Spyderco blades are superior (I have several of their blades). My experience is limited and I'm sure that many other makers have superb blades. I'm just saying that I wouldn't try to save maney when looking for quality.

You might try the Buck Alaskan for $69 from Cabela's. The heat treat is excellent and the leather sheath is nice, even though it's a folder.

You might take a look at the Leatherman Charge Ti from Amazon. It's a dandy multitool with titanium grips and an S30V knife blade. The price of titanium is forcing Leatherman to abandon it, so future availability may be limited. For a hundred bucks (shipped), it's a much better buy than I originally thought.

Wal*Mart used to have the Native for $40, but then I used to weigh 180 lbs. All good things come to an end.

Another vote for Buck Vantage Pro. If you find a quality one (centered blade, good lockup), you will feel like you hit the lottery.
