What's the most abusive thing you do with a knife?

My moras are my most abused knives. I used one to cut many yards of old carpet and chop through nails. The blade held up.

Throwing, Splitting wood, cutting wire, prying lids of paint and car batteries, other than that I carry a multitool for all the other nasty stuff. I've built 5 a man shelter using only a knife.

The worst thing I do to knives is try to make 'em!

thats just so dam funny i cant stop laughin . The worst thing i do is use my knives like pry bars. Most of um snap at the tip but some snap half way and some just bend like a hockey stick. lol

I have a few blems from knifemaking over the years. I use them for prying, use them as hammers spatulas, scrapers, and even as shim stock. The point of a knife does make for a sweet screw driver for those small head screws

I use mine to strip THHN copper wire up to 750 mcm and cutting holes in drywall for outlet baxes when I can't find my saw. It's a little 2" blade utility knife I made from M2. It holds up very well but does need touching up after stripping the wire.

I have a special knife that I keep handy when things just don't go well in the shop. I throw it at the stump where my anvil sits to get rid of frustrations. Sometimes it sticks and so far I have not broken any windows with it.

I did this early on to test the heat treat I was doing. Knife held up WAY longer than I ever expected :)

Wow! Some of you guys are downright brutal. For a bunch of guys that claim to love knives there is some really abusive loving going on here :D

It's pretty cool to see some of the crap that a good knife can take. I am often surprised that my knife hasn't busted a dozen times over.

I think I will repost this over in general to see what those guys have to add. I wonder if these kind of relationships are normal or is it just us knifemakers?

how are we to know what a knife can do if we dont push them over the top
also when a knife comes back that needs "fixed" and "was not abused" we can tell really quick if the person sending it in might have beeen a bit lacking in "nice avg use"

Oh yeah I agree with you there. Soon after I started knifemaking I pulled out all the stops, and if I think I can do a task with a knife I do it. Even if I think it might break the knife, I usually do it anyway just to see what will happen. Breakin' stuff is fun!
