whats the most devasting thing thats ever happened to one of your knives?

I don't collect production knives any longer, but I do have a few that really like, and have kept from days past. One being my first really good knife, an AFCK, that I bought back in 1994 when they were first released. They were so cool with there Spyderco licensed "round hole", old school "Bali-Song" butterfly logos on the blade and handle, avant garde ATS-34 super steel, etc.

Well, a couple of years ago at a BIG Labor Day kegger/BBQ party, I was screaming drunk and preparing to BBQ, but I had to lift the grill rack out of the charcoal cooker, to used the blade to get under the hot rack, and must have twisted it somehow. It snapped an inch right off the tip. Damn.

That little incident really pissed me off, but it was my own fault, so there's no one else to blame!

At about the age of 7 my father gave me his old boy scout knife as my first knife. A few weeks later we went camping, while fishing I lost the knife. I still have no idea how, I think about that day all the time. I think that was heart breaking for both of us.

Another time I was day hiking along the Blue Ridge Mountains, above elizabeth furnace, I lost my footing while going down this mountain and slid a good 10 yards on my ass. When I got back to camp I reach for my old spyderco I'd carried for years only to find it was gone. Those damn blue ridge mountains have claimed a number of my knives, yet I still love'em.

The worst: When I was 6 my grandfather gave me an old jack knife he had found inside the walls of a 150 year old house he was tearing down. It was in great shape with the exception of a chip in the scale. I lost it within a year or two. Then about 3 years later it turned up again. A year or two later I lost it again and have never seen it since. I always think of that knife and nothing has been able to replace it - maybe that's why I buy so many ;)

Next; My other Grandfather gave me a WWII dagger with stacked leather handle when I was about 13. Well I decided I was going to restore it using my dads bench grinder. I ground up the blade pretty bad and the stacked handle, oh yeah the pommel too. Now the knife is a reched looking thing and serves as a constant reminder to my stupidity when I was younger.

I did have an old swing guard automatic Stiletto that I carried to help my sister move to college at Kent State with. At some point I set the knife down on the bumper of my truck. That night when I was home (50+ miles from KSU) I was looking for my knife and couldn't find it so I went out to look for it in my truck. Imagine my surprise when I found it sitting on the bumper of my truck. It didn't fall off the entire way back home which was an even combination of city streets and highway driving!

cpirtle,
wow all the way home?! amazing!!!

...my wife says that about me!!! I lost my Grandpa's knife three days after I got it from my Grandma (1973, day of his funeral). Just reminded me she passed away this last June at age 93, weeks before her birthday, a very sweet christian woman.

...anyway my wife says Im still looking for Grandpa's knife!!!....hmmmm...maybe she right thats why I have so many?

My mother says that she is going to get my Grandpa's pocket watch fixed and give it to me. I hope at 33 Im alot more responsible then at 4!!! I'll just have to put it up!!!

hey pete, you ever though about using a strop on your blade? will prevent future excessive scratches, wear, ect
Rev, funny you should mention that :D. Earlier this week I placed my order for a strop from HandAmerican. I was going to make one myself but these days it seems I'm going through a mid-life klutzy phase.

glad to here it pete!!! (not about your klutzy-phase that is, although I think Ive been in one for years!!).

I decided to faithfully use mine for all my knives earlier this last year. Now my edcs still look good after much use, and sharpening!!!

Worst thing? Scraping hardened tar off a metal roof, with my EKI Commander.

Wanna know what it did to the blade? Nothing some gas, then soap and water, then oil, then a sharpening, didnt fix. :)

Thank you Mr. Emerson!!

It happened so long ago, I think I've blocked it from my memory, but when I was about 14-15, I had a small collection of knives. From what I can remember, there were a couple sweet Remington folders, a Russell type fixed blade skinner, a Case fixed bowie, and an older aviators survival knife. Not worth a fortune, but had alot of sentimental value. Well anyways, mom (as moms do) forced me to clean my room. I think those knives must have been in a paper bag or something, cause I threw away a bunch of stuff, and never saw them again.

I guess I've spent the rest of my years since then trying to find those knives again, but it's not the same.

Oh yeah, before I knew how to use a buffing grinder properly, I messed up the handles on a few sweet older knives trying to "Clean them up".

Foolish youth....

I'd spent months saving up fo an Aitor Jungle King, (yeah I know:p ) & kept it in a cupboard in the kitchen. Whilst hosting a party, I was upstairs, getting the way you do, when a guest ran upstairs & shouted "Colin, they're doing hot knives in your kitchen!" in a panicky manner. my response was "so!" Boy, when he tol' me which knife was doing duty over the gas hob:eek: , I flew down those stairs:(

This just happened about an hour ago. I put a ding in edge of my almost brand new Sebenza. As I was taking the knife apart for cleaning, the blade got loose after I took the pivot pin out and loosened the handle screws. The blade rotated and *TINK* it hit my set of allen wrenches. Now there's a small ding that I need to get fixed tomorrow at the knife store because I don't have a sharpener or anything like that handy for the whole week and can't stand the fact that my Sebbie has a ding. On a side note, does anybody know how they'll get rid of the ding? I called 'em today and they said bring it in tomorrow and they'll take care of it.

Just to be sure, I would send her in....and then invest a few bucks in a Sharpmaker (best 50 bucks I've ever spent). As far as abuse or worst things I have ever done, I tried to take the edge off the thumb studs on my CRKT CF M16 and after about 10 minutes of slow grinding, i found that I had ground too much off and that the blade was almost impossible to open...pure stupidity.
Matt
