What's the most you would spend on a knife?

I've spent way more than I should have on a non-custom knife. Got carried away on Ebay and my pride got involved and I'll bet I paid twice what the knife is really worth.

But I've dropped $250 on a custom folder and the same or more on custom fixed blades.

Just set your budget and stick with it. And don't spend what you can't afford (meaning bills, mortgage, and food come first).

You know my opinion on the Scagel...buy it, my friend!

It's very hard to say/predict. My personal yardstick is based on utility: If the knife continues to give me pleasure, I like using it, looking at it and the childish joy of ownership, then it was worth every penny and more.

Doesn't work for all knives, however pricey........

...alot less than I once did.

I've paid from $1000 to $1500 several times, but have sold all of those but one.
I do have a couple on order that are around $300. A fixed blade, and a custom shadow slipjoint.
I am trying real hard to spend less on knives, and am doing pretty good so far.

So far I've not spent more than $60 on any one knife, usually half that.

But I do have well over a hundred knives. I like users, but I like quality too,
so a lot of my collection are SAK's and Case knives.

I guess the real question, since everyone has a different financial situation, is where does your maximum for a single knife fall relative to your "stuff I don't need" budget? For me, it's about a month's worth. That is, if I gave up spending money on everything I didn't really need for four weeks, that's how much I would spend on a knife. Granted, it's still a pretty low number, and I only buy one or two knives per year, but that's how I think about it.

It just got me curious about what your limit is as far as knives go. I know there are those out there with 500.00 customs, and those that would never drop more than 50.00, so I thought it would be fun to see who falls where.

I don't really consider myself a knife "collector." I carry a knife every day and have more than the average bear. And I think about them, read about them, etc. way more than the average bear. But at this point in my life, I don't spend much more than $40 on any given knife. Hence, my sock drawer is filled with Victorinox SAK, three Cases, a couple Bucks, a couple Old Timers, a Gerber LST, and so on.

Regarding spending bick bucks on knives, I'm kind of of the Dave Ramsey mindset: If you don't have other debt, and have the cash to spend on them, go for it. You've earned the right. But if your knife-buying habit is making Visa or Mastercard rich, you need to re-think your priorities in life.

Between the last time I posted and right now, $825 just flew out the window for this:

That is amazing. I can see spending that kind of money for something like that.

currently the most i've spent was on a Spyderco Captain, about a month ago. the price was $250, & i was happy to do it. that knife is so hard to find new in the box. believe me i've looked. i use to not like spending more than $20-$30 on a knife. i use to think that money was better spent on a gun, but then i figured that i can carry a knife in more places than a gun, & i also figured why not have nice things. so long as the bills are paid & the lights are on & food on the table & don't have to borrow money i say get the knife you want.

if you went with the 2 or 3 nice case knives instead of this knife you've been wanting i promise you you will be looking at them case knives down the road & say to yourself i wish i had gotten that other knife instead. get what you REALLY want.
