what's the mystery oil that khuks come slathered in?

It's a rare aphrodesiac derived from the pituitary gland of the Himalayan snow leopard.

Aww, I was hoping for yeti butter :(
If this post was in Whine and Cheese we could really spell out what the substance is.

But since it's not my answer has to be that it's the oil obtained by squeezing the glands on each side of the, naaaw, I'd better not. :p

Mix one 8 ounce bottle of Kama Sutra Pleasure Garden massage oil with 1/2 to 1 ounce oil of clove ( available at the pharmacy for toothaches ).

Wipe down the blade and apply to scabbard leather. Dribble a few drops down into the wood on the inside of the scabbard.

Re-oil well and send khuk and scabbard to a friend. Let him explain the cloying smell to his guests for the next six months.

As soon as I saw that Rusty posted on this thread I knew he'd be plugging his Oil. He did not dissapoint. :D

I have heard that Uncle Bill uses WD 40 on the blades. I'm not sure though. It doesn't smell like it when they get to me.

holy crap...!!

wait.....just crap...nothin' holy about it.....:p

It's mineral oil.....comes from Nepal that way (IIRC).

It's Yeti grease. Wipe it off immediately, since they don't exist, and apply Break-Fre CLP.

What Dan said.

I've heard WD40 before, but this stuff has no smell and seems thick for a spray-on lubricant. My guess is mineral oil.

As a service to the forum, when my next shipment arrives, I'll conduct a taste taste. It's the only way to be sure.

The problem with wd-40 for blades is that it is not a lubricant, not even a good penetrator (which it was made for) according to a mechanic friend of mine. The do not use wd40.

My guess would be mineral oil as well.

I asked Uncle Bill this recently, he said the last time he was there the kamis were using motor oil, but they could be using something different now. So, officially it's still 'mystery oil.' The way it adheres to the metal sort of reminds me of silicone oil, but I seriously doubt the kamis would be using anything so exotic. At any rate, other forum posts have lots of info on how to care for and store blades, for long term storage I happen to prefer a grease called BG-73.

WD-40 will eat up your leather scabbard.

Dan, why would WD eat up the leather? The blade contacts wood inside the sheath. I'd guess that WD might dry the leather if exposed to it long enough, but you'd have to slather it on, right?

Bill does use WD, or at least used to.

dries it out. Same with the wood.

at first, sounds like a good idea....to keep moisture out of the sheath. But the WD-40 will dry it out, whereas using an oil like mineral oil will block rust and protect the sheath as well.

Now, we're talking long term here.....it's certainly ok to use WD-40 now and then. I don't advocate it for storage or regular use, though.

The issue comes up in ShopTalk now and then....what I've said reflects personal experience as well as what I've read there.

OK. I'll stop using it. Looks like baby oil is a miracle product with 1000 uses. On Sunday during the birthday party for my 5 year old a guest spilt some Super glue on his hand and wanted a deactivating agent fast before his fingers stuck together.

I brought the mineral oil.

baby oil

mineral oil

different?

Mineral oil can be consumed (as a laxative -- although probably not a good idea)

Baby oil seems less viscose and I'm not sure it's edible

Is there a difference? Which is better?

edited to add: oil made from babies doesn't sound like a good thing for a khukri

Rusty,

Is that really your recipe? I've smelled that oil before, no wonder that became my favorite khukuri! :D :D :D
