What's the proper sheath for this 124

I just bought an '82 or earlier 124, at least that's my take since '82 was the last year with Buckarta handles. The knife is mint or at least near mint, but it doesn't have the original sheath, just a custom sheath made by Robert Jones.

Could any of you fixed blade guys (or anyone else) tell me what design the original sheath was?

Dave, That model would have a black snoopy style (wrap around keeper) sheath . Shortly after your model Buck offered the 124 with Rosewood laminate handle and that one has a burgundy sheath of the same style .Woops, please excuse me for not waiting for other fixed blade collectors to chime in . DM

The suede finish sheath shows marks every time it is touched.

This an 81 sheath. Earlier ones had either anoopy style or swinging leather sheath with pointed end.

Thanks David and Tele,

I've seen the same thing with the suede sheaths I have. Did the 124 ever come with a flap over sheath like the other fixed blades did during their production life span?

Telechronos, that is a neat sheath. I mean it looks neat but I am sure it shows every time it hits something. Never saw one before.

Yes! However, they should have come with a trailer hitch rather than a belt loop.

Flat, the swivel sheaths were 1980 . Tele, On this model I see more snoopy style than flap over . When did the flap over end and the snoopy began ? Nice Nemo . Plumber, I checked mine and I have a early 70's micarta handle 3 line 124 with a black snoopy sheath, then a early 80's with the same snoopy style black sheath and a early 90's rosewood handle with the same snoopy style sheath only now burgundy . David:

I cannot tell you when the flap-over sheaths ended. Joe's data sheet is unclear on the subject. I do have a pretty strong belief that they did not extend beyond 1970 when the phenolics were discontinued. Joe only mentions the flap over for the year 1967 but that was the last year for the teflon spacers and mine is 1968.

Regarding the later sheaths, there is another small distinction. It is true that they were snoopy style sheaths but the earlier ones were "swing style" (note the single rivet on Flatlander's sheath. Later ones had two rivets one at the top of the belt loop on the inside and one at the bottom. Also I cannot pin down the date of the change on that feature either. I think it may be around 1973-1974.

So, the flap overs should hold a two liner . Ok, agreed . I believe thats close . On the swivel sheaths, we talked about those last year and I recall someone determined they were of 1980 . I've seen those and it held a 3 line 119 with the two and two spacers . (finger guard and pommel) I don't think they're from the early 70's at best late 70's . But somebody here knows . Thanks . DM

I will have to have more proof that the timeline of the 124 sheaths was the same as the other 100 series fixed blades.

From my causual observations (of NIB black Buckarta 124s in two piece boxes) on fleaBay, I was under the opinion that the swing sheath was early 70's and they seem to command more collector's interest.

Anyway, I bought this Jones sheath to carry my new 124 (came to me in a Blackhawk sheath) and this swing sheath will be set aside for later.

I happen to find this sheath to be very attractive.

This is my Puerto Rican 124 (came from a hardware store in PR via ebay) in a one piece box that is part of my Pre-86 100 series accumulation.

Tele,

I believe that sheath is slightly short for your 70's knife...see the blade above the sheath? Wasn't this sheath made for the current 124 LE models that are a hair more diminutive when compared to your knife (IMHO).

I do not think the 124 sheaths followed the same pattern as the 100 series sheaths . As I could still buy a 120 and a over the flap style sheath came w/ it in 1980 . In 1981 I bought a 119 and a wrap around style came with it . Of all my 124's I do not have a over the flap style sheath . I have noticed that some of my 124 sheaths differ a quarter inch in length . Actually that knife is a 1980 knife. BUCK used black Buckarta at least through 1981. Regarding the sheath length, I took a look at the non-flap over sheaths in my collection and whether swing style, snoopy style, many (not all) had the same space you describe. These include sheaths dating back to the early 70s.

I'll be interested to hear what you find out on your sheaths.

If micarta was used into 1981, did Buck put micarta handles on 425M 124's?

All of you folks who are a BCCI member go look at Joe's 122/124 info in the December 2006 news letter. It will answer your sheath questions. These were first issued with a plastic Nemo sheath or the Flap over sheath, then the swinging loop sheath, then the Snoopy style sheath. I did a photo of all three style sheaths for last weeks SPS, but it was out of focus and I deleted it.
Flap over: 1967-1970
Swinging: 1971-1973
Snoopy: started in 1973

Thanks to everyone for the info. Looks like I need a snoopy sheath for the latest one to make it correct.
