What's the purpose of reputation points?

I already know how to reduce my reputation points, just say something that isn't positive about President Bush. But, what is the purpose of reputation points?

LOL... No, the only "obvious" thing is that the link doesn't explain the purpose of having reputation points, unless DaveH is the person in-charge of that...

It's one of the "who cares" features for most people because they really don't care about their rep points. For some, you know the type, obsessive compulise, wants to know if people like them and approve of them, bitch when they get negative points, etc. It provides the "mirror" of public approval they crave so much. To search for "meaning" beyond that is pointless.

So, reputation points have no real purpose? That seems about right.
