What's the purpose of Serrations?

Finally, a voice of sanity emerges from the darkness.

A good serrated edge will do virtually everything a plain edge will do, and some things it will do quite a bit better.

They're horrid at shaving survey lath and woodcarving/whittling. I've tried. The tip is of some use, but for long, broad slices in wood, the short PE toward the tip generally isn't enough. You can get by with a combo edge, but a full PE blade will last longer for carving between touch-ups. I use my EDC for all types of cutting, including casual whittling, so I prefer a full PE for my purposes.

I'd definitely go all SE before I ever bothered with a combo edge again. SE has a lot of great applications that I think most people write off because they either don't want to sharpen them, or find them unappealing to look at.

I have a fixed blade knife with serrated edge on the back of the spine. They are not sharpened enough to really cut well. Does anyone know what they might be used for? Thanks
