What's the saw for?

I have seen multiple thread stating that the wood saw on SAK’s and multi-tools is useful in a camping situation. On the models that I am familiar with the saw is about 3” long, so all I can cut is a stick maybe 2” in diameter. Unless its hickory, I can break a 2 inch stick, so what do you use the saw for?

Better suited to cutting live green branches from trees for shelter. Pretty tough to break still still alive. Especially true of evergreens.

Also can be used for bone/cartilidge, making trap triggers, notching, and many other uses.

Thanks, Thatmguy. That makes a little more sense. Just my inexperience showing I guess.

An SAK saw will rip through plywood like nobody's business. Not that I'd want to rip the length of a whole sheet, but for a small quick and dirty job, it's a nice tool.

Sawing half-way though a larger piece of wood creates a stress-riser. When the wood is struck against something hard (rock, hard ground, log) with the cut down, the piece of wood tends to split lengthways.

The saw is also good if you are making any traps
The saw allows you to cut clean notches easier

I find the SAK saw useful even for cutting thin branches or sticks, just make a notch all around it or on opposite sides and then break it, it´s more precise than breaking it without the notch and a bit easier than with a knife blade, also saves the knife blade´s edge. If you want a more precise or clean cut, make a good notch all around and then saw across the center, this is good for making posts for tents, shelters and such about 1" in diameter.

The little SAK or Leatherman saw blades are wonderful for cutting bamboo. Bamboo can be very, very hard at times and the harder it is the more brittle it gets. You can fashion all sorts of things out of bamboo and a saw makes it very easy. Even a very sharp knife is hard to work with where the saw will get the job done with very little effort and a reduced risk of splitting.

Even felling large bamboo is possible with a SAK saw. Once you have a small hole started you insert the saw blade and work your way around making a single cut. Mac

In High School, me and some buddies cut a 2X4 in woodshop with my SAK Vic' Champ's saw in less than 3 minutes.

Blade was almost to hot to touch at the end, but the knife held up perfect.
