what's the secret to the plunge line

I struggled for a long time before I got the hang of doing a good plunge. Here's how I do it. I like using the trizact belts (the gray, tire tread belts). I usually start with an A-300, which I beleive is around a 60 grit. I put a magic marker line on the blade side facing me (the side to be ground will be facing away, towards the grinder). On my first pass on the grinder, I tilt the blade up very high, so I am making a pass right on the edge. I go slow, eying the mark, and end the pass at the mark. On the second or third pass, you will feel the belt hit the stop you have created. That is the beginning of your plunge line. Slowly, work the grind up to where you want iy. One of the essential keys to getting a good plunge is sharp belts. Very important.

Another thing to be aware of is most people have a dominate hand, and without extreme focus, you will find you subconciously rock the blade on the belt, resulting in a thin section near the plunge line. Go slow, use a gentle, light hand, and focus. With practice, you can get a perfect grind with graceful. rounded plunge lines.

Best of luck,

Dave
