i have seen bowies with full tangs and full gards. how do you get the gard on when the tang is just as wide as the blade.

1 not all knives that look to be full tang are full tang. Often the tang is a hidden tang and what looks to be tang is actually a seperate piece, kinda U shaped that the tang fits into. This is why some knives with full guards can heve a tang that is bigger than the whole in the guard. 2 the guard is pinned on. 3 The blade may look like it is the same thickness and actually be 1/16 bigger, or even less and still be enough to hold the gaurd in place.

These are the ways I know.

Hope it helps.

im thinking about making a drop point with a full gard and full tang look. but i want to use some of don hansons mammoth ivory. i wanted to do the gard out of forged wrought iron with ivory scales. but if i did the fake tang with the u piece around it i could also make it out of wrought iron with some file work. then slap on a copper spacer then the ivory with some copper mosaic pins. o my mouth is watering. what is the best way to atatch ivory?

You can also do what is known as a wrapped tang. Basically a stick tang with piece of brass or copper soldered around the perimeter of the stick to build it back up to the full tang for scales. The -U- shaped piece you mentioned, just soldered rather than glued on to the stick. So its not "fake" ;) You would of course need to solder your guard on first. I've seen some Loveless knives done like this as well as Tom Krein. Not only is it super secure, the contrast of materials looks super

Also, if the geometry of the blade allows it, you can slip the guard on from the front. Pin and solder of course

i dont want to pin it because im going to etch it. i was thinking about jb welding the u to the tang but soldering is a good idea. how should the ivory scales be atatched. at 100 bucks a pop for scales it would be nice to get it right the first time. any other design sajestions.

Jt
Make the hanlde about .10 smaller than the blade on each side and slide the guard on from the tang end.
