What's the worst you've ever cut yourself?

Middle finger knuckle, to the bone with a K390 Stretch. After almost a year, there is still some pain.
That was the case with my Cuisinart incident. Depending on how I twisted or turned my hand and body, I could still feel it. Seven years later, that is mostly gone. I think the connective tissue gets injured, the scar forms going down several layers, and the regrowth is never the same. For sure the top layer of skin is different.

i flip balisongs so cuts on the fingers are hand aint unusual. i also happen to work in health care, so some knife cuts arent discovered until monday morning. but the worst ive cut myself, was the bottom of my foot. yes, you read that right. i was playing around with a kizer feist front flipper, a new style of knife ive never handled before. it was a combination of avoiding cutting my fingers but the knife flying out of my hand as i sorta wrist flicked, hit my desk and then the knife tip poked into the bottom of my foot. i could not possibly imagine that happening despite years of tossing balisongs around.

I shoved a Dietmar Kressler Loveless Stiff Horn right through the pad of my right thumb.

F**k me it was sore!😱

I’ve cut the tip of my left index finger off 1/4” three different times with a chef’s knife. In my profession, it happens. I also tried to grab a freshly sharpened Kelly hatchet head out of the air after dropping it, to keep from it landing on my sandel clad toes. It got into my middle knuckle on my thumb and severed some tendons. Took a year to get back mobile. Still have a bit of stiffness in it.

I was in the 8th grade and had a buddy sleeping over. Like any 13-year-old of the era, I slept with a knock-off Kabar 1219c under my pillow. Try to stay judgment-free here folks. This was the 80s, aka the Halcyon days of survival / fighting knives. I had seen "Red Dawn" and wasn't taking any chances of getting caught off guard.

Anyhoot, we were supposed to be sleeping. I was in my bed, and my buddy was bunked in a sleeping bag on the floor. It was pitch black in the room, and I decided to be cool and whip that knife out. I wanted the 'Masters of the Universe' "SCHLINGGGG!" sound. So gripped and ripped. Eh-oh, no sound at all, other than a "drip... drip... drip...". Huh, that's odd. Sounds like water dripp-UH OH!. So, I ball my left fist up and make a mad dash to the kitchen to look at my hand (over the sink).

Yessir, that razor-sharp blade sliced right through the crap-tastic vinyl sheath and my index finger - BAD. It looked like a half-cut cartoon ham between my hand and next knuckle. Oh boy, I was in deep. Ok, ok... Calm down. What has scouts taught you? I applied direct pressure, with some paper towels. As soon as I would take off the pressure, gusher again. Elevation plus pressure = progress, to the point that I went to the medicine cabinet, retrieved the little brown bottle of "Nu-Skin", and - with one hand - glued my finger closed.

It looked, well, not great. I stupidly tried to straighten it a little and it immediately broke back open and started dripping. Ok, no-go on that. More glue, but this time I coiled my finger like a nautilus to keep it closed.

[Quick word from our Sponsor: If you're wondering why I didn't alert my parents, there is a long back-story which I'll summarize thusly: It took me years of whimpering and making voluminous and empty promises to actually sorta have a knife. Which I know was unofficially acknowledged and barely tolerated when sailing was smooth. If word of this debacle got out, I likely still wouldn't be allowed to own a knife. Ok, back to the action...]

I literally kept my hand balled up in my pocket for more than a week, before I dared to try to use it again. I mean, I would rinse it in the shower, etc, but it was just a club for ~ten days. Then, slowly over time, I started using it again. My finger had drawn up / atrophied to the point that it took me (again) weeks to straighten that finger. For a solid week I had a 90-degree 'trigger finger'.

They say that God protects fools and children - which he apparently double-credited me for at that time. I never had to have anything done to that finger, and other than a still-visible scar, it is completely fine. No idea how, but whew...

Worst cut? Using a razor blade to cut off guide wraps on a fishing rod to repair the guide. Slipped and went into the side of the finger pretty much down to the bone. Wrapped it up good and it healed fine, but I didn't have feeling in the fingertip for a few months!

Knifemaking injury? I was hogging steel with a 36 grit ceramic belt and my tool rest dipped down, the blade went between the contact wheel and belt while it was moving, pulling my thumb down and through the gap between the tool rest and belt and ground my thumb down until it fit through! No bone showing, but it was nasty. Cleaned it up, wrapped it up in paper towels and duct tape and kept profiling out a batch of knives.

I did get a nasty burn on the top of my foot this past Fall while forging. Some scale popped off and got under the tongue of my shoe. Melted the sock and some of the tongue of the shoe before I could get the shoe off and scale off. Put a nice burn on the top of my foot that took over a month to heal!

First or second blade I ever forged. I was grinding the blade on my new to me 2x72 and got the blade too close to the belt. My thumb was riding the side of the blade and when the blade popped off of the belt, my thumb slide into the razors edge. Sliced the cap of my thumb right off to the nerve bundle. It’s been abt a year and a half and my thumb still hasn’t fully recovered.

I cleanly sliced the tip of my middle finger off, took the separated thick piece of skin and firmly held it in place before it even started bleeding. By some miracle, it reattached itself that evening and I kept an eye on it. It heal almost perfectly. I was a bit off when reattaching and now have a bit of an edge to it. I catch it on a string every now and again when playing guitar.

But...!

My worst cut wasn't accidental or by my own hand...

I shared in another post that I cut my finger bad enough to cause nerve damage, require stitches, ect. What really happened is that I was surprised attacked. The wound was defensive, as the blade was headed for my temple. I was sliced on my finger, and a lesser cut near my eye.

That was near two decades ago. Drug deal gone bad. Lesson learned. I got out the game, found lasting sobriety, and live a much better life today.

I can relate.

My first 15 stitches came from my parrying a knife swung at me when I should have created space by moving back. The knife slash took off a chunk of my left index finger which someone had the presence of mind to wrap up and I then had the ER graft back on in the aftermath. It took about seven weeks to heal but it worked. Now the circular scar is barely visible except for when it's cold. Fortunately, I had no nerve damage from it. (I do have nerve damage in my right ring and pinkie fingers from an accidental injury with a parang.)

Glad you lived to tell the tale! Glad I did as well!

It was a humbling experience for me. We are not invincible. And in my case, poor decisions led to adverse consequences. Play stupid games...

was at work breaking down some really heavy duty boxes back in 2029 with admittedly too small of a knife, and cutting towards myself to boot. the blade bound up in the cardboard then popped loose and got myself in the upper thigh……..View attachment 2872506
the bruise a week later was truly epicView attachment 2872512

started paying more attention the what i’m doing while cutting since. couple inches different one way & i woulda hit the artery, couple another way & it woulda been even worse. and of course wife still makes fun of me to this day.
Extremely close to what I did in maybe 2015 with a box cutter. Box up against the side of my thigh, cut the box open, continued on into my thigh lol. Maybe 5 inches long and down to the white meat, I 100% needed stitches, but was a scared 19 year old at work that had never been that injured before. Kept it wrapped for a while and it managed to heal up pretty well. Got a wicked scar on my leg that continues to fade as the years pass.

yeah i’ve still got a pretty good scar from that one too. & my picture doesn’t do it justice, was deep as heck, probably about an inch and a half of the blade went in
