I went for a short walk with my son this afternoon and we ran across these on the ground. Fairly firm until broken apart and all of similar size. Pic with SAK Classic for size reference.

Sorry, this may be a noob thing to some of you but I just don't know what it is.

Looks to be the seed pod of a sycamore tree (platanus occidentalis) or some relative there of, But I'm no expert...
 
Stormstaff...alot of the knowledge comes from study and experience. My advice...go buy a few field guides for your area and practice naming/locating species.
 
Once you remove the seeds the center section was used as a button, or so the story goes. They also call Sycamores Button Wood.
