Whats up with my Kershaw speedsafe???!?

I've had a speedsafe chive for about a week now. I play with it constantly, cause I'm a little kid.

Today, I noticed when I press on the flipper, the spring action only deploys the blade about half-open. That is, there must be enough drag or something that's stopping it from opening all the way and locking. It wasn't a progressive thing, like the spring wearing out or something. It was more like immediate, like one minute it was deploying great, the next, it stopped.

I opened it up, thinking there was dirt or no lube or something jamming it up. I cleaned it w/ soap and water, relubed, put it together. Same thing..

What gives?

Did you re-assemble it correctly?
Did you tighten it too much?

I dont own one but I have played with them before.

Sounds like the pivot screw could be to tight. Try adjusting it. Or you're not pressing the flipper fast enough. My Dominator does that to me if I don't give the flipper a good enough push.

nope nope, the pivot screw is loose enough.

and I'm giving the flipper a decent push...

:(

lol

damn that blows..

..oh well, time to get another knife :D. why bother with that potential glitch??

As short a time as you've had it, I'd suggest taking it back to where you got it and get it exchanged for another. One great way to slick up any action is to put one drop of Tuf-Glide on each pivot washer and work it a few dozen times. After the carrier evaporates, usually within 24 hours, it will open smoother with much less resistence. The dry film will keep crud from building up, which can slow even the best action down after enough time. It is the first thing I do with every single folder I buy.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out!

that isnt needed "anonymous" theres no potential glitch.

Email the good folks at Kershaw warranty repair, dawn r will hook you up.

I had _exactly_ the same problem with my Chive. Took it apart for cleaning, put it back together, still wouldn't open properly. Did it again, with no success. Tossed it in the back of a drawer, planning to call Kershaw and see if they'd still service it after I'd voided the warrantee.

About a week ago, out of sheer optimism, I took it apart again (I noticed the knife sitting right next to the Torx driver and said "hey, maybe I made a mistake last time"). I was just about to reassemble it when I noticed a tiny imperfection on the "outside" edge of the spring (looked like a tiny black line, felt like a bump).

I flexed the spring just a teensy bit, and it snapped right in half. Obviously, the spring had cracked, but not enough to come apart... just enough to foul up the opening.

I still don't know if Kershaw will honor the warrantee, but I do know that my "manual Chive" just don't cut it. ;)

i've never been a fan of autos, or even the very concept. so to hear of an auto-like knife failing just furthers my dislike. blah.. take it or leave it, it's just my opinion.

get another blade.. the shopping process is as fun as the purchase!

Found it.

Upon further inspection...

there's a tiny crack that is running laterally across my torsion bar.

this thing is like a week old...

sheesh.

email to kershaw customer service on it's way...

:(

When you find an email address at Kershaw that actually works, could you post it here? I have a Boa that needs fixing....

Thanks!:)

the one on their website works fine
i've received 2 torsion bars from them over the period of 6 months for 2 different speedsafes
they even paid for S&H to singapore :)

i would take your Chive as the exception, and not the rule, when it comes to Speedsafe knives. i've bought 5 so far -- and they all flick PERFECTLY, after 100s of openings.

abe m.

i would tend to agree
but please take note, no speedsafe owner will be satisfied with only 100s of openings :D

the one on their website works fine

Which one??? Can you post the exact email address you sent your email to? PLEASE?! I have sent an email to every single address on their site and it is always returned to me with an error message.

Give kershaw a call at 1800-325-2891, they will take care of any problems.

I own quite a few and have never had this kind of problem before. Could the torsion spring be bent the wrong way? or the pivot screw too tight?

I have 5 speed/safes and I have read else where the torsion bar problem seems to be on the heavier blade models where the bar is working on a more mass situation. and the smaller versions with torsion bar problems are an abberation(a fluke)I would send it to kershaw and let them see what failed for future design modifications ie quality assurance
