What's up with Small Sebenza pricing lately?

Shamefully, I dont own one yet...(hangs head low)

Its next on my list after a custom tactical. So far I haven't seen the large classic w/micarta drop below $455 yet.

Hmm... I like the new Corvettes, but I'd personally rather have a Dodge Magnum R/T. I'm sorry, I've just always been a sucker for the station wagon.

I imagine there will always be a place for CRK, and no, I'm not sure where they'd go either. I don't mind the classics, after all I've always had a thing for the '55 Chevy Bel Air, and the Browning Hi-Power. I just wonder if the cheaper alternatives will have people thinking "yeah, but is it really THAT much better?" I don't think anyone can say that the '40s Indian Chief model isn't one of the sexiest American motorcycles ever to be produced, and they ran like nobody's business. However, with competition coming from Harley and Japan- I mean a modern Chief is something like 35k (?), while an entry level Sportster is just over 6k, and for 10k you can get a Hyabusa (sp) which will go 189 mph straight off the showroom floor. The Chief is still sexy, and a definite classic; but people think they're getting more for their money with other models/companies.

The dodge magnum RT looks pretty cool, but it gets pwn3d by just about everything on the road. It's a high powered and very, very overweight family car (4100 lbs). When it gets up around 6 or 7 hundred horsepower, I'll consider it a competitor.

I also am a big wagon and hatchback fan.

I never really understood the love of the Sebenza. It's a frame lock and it's too expensive.

I'd rather have an Axis lock G10 or Aluminum folder for 1/3rd the price.

I agree with everything that Artfully Martial has said already in this thread.

I've noticed this also with customs. If you need the cash and want to move the knife, the price will have to reflect that. I think that the people that shop the exchange forums are looking for a good deal (aren't we all?). I have a left hand Crawford KFF and offered it on the forum for $100 less than I paid. I got not one response. I bet I could move the knife at $300 but that's almost only half of what I paid. I'm not willing to take that loss.

Maybach? Pretty? That's a contradiction in terms - especially the hood ornament that looks like it was designed on an Etch-a-Sketch! :barf:

You want pretty? ;)

The reason is that there are some dam fine knives out there for $200. I read a recent review where the Spyderco Manix cleaned clock on a bunch of knives costing twice as much in all types of cutting tests.

I have always felt that the Sebenza, both large and small, are way overpriced.
Maybe folks are coming to their senses...

Riiiiighhhht. I'm sure that's it. No one ever bought a Sebenza because they simply liked it and actually wanted to buy one.

Anyway...

It's not a Ti-handled framelock, but the Benchmade 960 RED I just got yesterday is a great example of the QC found in today's factory knives.

I mean, this thing is drop dead grogeous, clean, and precise. If you told me a small production shop made it in limited numbers and it cost 300 bucks, I'd believe it. But it's $130.00 from your favorite discounter, loaded with trick little touches and higher-end materials you'd have only found in custom pieces a few years ago. I mean, the thing is NICE. Even if you don't like the design itself, there is no arguing the level of fit and finish. It's stellar.

These aren't my pictures, but they are about the best I've seen of this particular model. While still no substitute for having it in your hand for personal inspection, tell me that's not one pretty impressive "factory" knife.

Another comparison would be the Hinderer Firetac I recently picked up. $400.00 new from a dealer. That's large Sebenza pricing territory. Both are Ti framelocks. Both feature ~3.5" S30V blades. But as much as I like the Sebenza, I'd pick the Hinderer everytime, if I could only have one. In that instance, I would think the Sebbie would be a tough sell for anyone facing a similar purchase decision.

It is arguably the most beautiful knife Benchmade has ever made. I'd argue that. It's been on my list for a long time now....never can get myself to get it though.

I understand that titanium costs more, and that's okay, but a lot of folks (me) prefer G10. And I really don't like bead blast titanium..just because it's so easy to scratch. I have two titanium knives nonetheless.

Of course, G10 set in red aluminum is pretty cool too.

Let me clarify...
IMO, paying a "custom knife price" for a production knife makes no sense to me.

Ah. Gotcha. Point taken. Sorry 'bout that.

Well, the Maybach and the Caddy 16 ARE beautiful to me. The Maybach has a history that is just plain cool. Its refinements are MUCH more important then how fast it goes. I've always been into Volvos as well, so your aesthetic and mine might differ quite a bit. If I had the money for one, I'd pick it over even an Enzo, but like I said that's just me.

Oh, and Cockroachfarm, I'd rather have a Lambo than a Ferrari any day of the week!

While I don't have a Sebenza yet, I'm hoping to get one within the next 6months and I'll be getting one because I feel there is a price to have certain things that aren't run of the mill. Am I being taken? Depends who you talk to. If somebody wants a Sebenza, but refuses to pay the asking price and gets something else for a lower price with all the same features, he/she will probably still want the Sebenza in the end. If it's what you want, that won't likely change. I bought twelve different sea kayaks hoping to get an alternative to the more expensive, more exotic boat I really wanted. In the end, I bought the one I wanted in the first place and haven't been happier. Id' love to get a Sebenza at a fantastic price, but I'm not holding my breath. The funny thing for me is that coming to this forum probably set in stone my want for a Sebenza, where-as it was only more of a pipe-dream knife in the past! Thanks guys:) !

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of other production Ti frame-locks (BM's Skirmish, Buck's Mayo 172, Camillus' Dominator, & Emerson's HD-7), but definitely see a BIG difference between them and the Sebbie! What is that difference, you may ask. The heat treatment of the Ti liner face (where it meets the tang)! That is the real difference between a production, Ti frame-lock peice in the Sebbie's price range (or a Strider for example) and a Benchmade or Bradley (also a BM product). That is the difference between a knife that will last close to a lifetime (Sebbie or Strider) and a less costly Ti frame-locking production piece (think Benchmade Pinacle), whose lock will wear out rather quickly.

My BM 635 mini-Skirmish's Ti frame-lock has worn its way over to the other scale quite rapidly. I have never noticed that type of behavior with my Sebbie, and I had the Sebbie a lot longer, and used it a lot more. Once other manufacturers start heat treating the Ti liner face on their Ti frame-locks, I suspect the Sebbie will be in trouble, or, at the very least, the prices for for those other pieces will rival the Sebbie's. Until then, CRK and the Sebbie have nothing to worry about.

Best wishes,
3G

Firebat, you are making it very difficult for me to resist the urge to get a 960. My one question is how well the red anodized finish holds up to regular contact with coins and keys in the pocket.

On the subject of the Sebenza, I think they are very well made, but not worth the price to me. I have carried a small sebenza for a few days (on loan from my father) and I have handled several large sebenzas, but they just don't do anything for me. I actually like the design of my Buck 172 better. I do happen to like some of the graphic sebenzas, but we are talking a jump in price, too.
