What's up with the new Militarys?

I just have to ask.
I was in the store the other day and I got a look at the new version of Militarys. I have to say I am quite disappointed.
To be honest, and please do not be offended, they look cheap. I mean what is with the tacky writing on the blade? The old way of engraving was much more pleasing to the eye.
Please tell me this was a mistake and you are working to fix it. Otherwise I will have to shop around for the older models.
I have been a dedicated customer of Spyderco knives and a big fan of the Military(except the newest model) and will continue to be so, but I have to speak my peace.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Thanks Roy, and I thought I might have been the only person who prefers the older engraving. The older style is less obtrusive and gives a touch of class to the knife IMO. I also have a Chinook and with Keating's signature on the blade, the laser etch looks pretty cool, but for the way the Military models are done I don't care for.

Hey Dexter, or anyone, do you have a picture of the new way of writing on the Military?

I have to admit I prefer the engraving on my Military. I'm not too crazy about the new laser etching.

I must agree. When I got the latest Military, the first thing I did was grind off the laser engraving and refinish the blade. The diamond engraving on the old ones looked much better.

I rather like that laser-etching. Gives the knife a modern look, while at the same time maintaining its character. I also like the fact that it's very visible, so you or whoever looks at the knife REALLY know what they are dealing with. I especially like the weird "A" without the horizontal line. Really makes it look unique.

Hey, if you don't like yours, send them my way! :P

I have to agree, the new etching stands out to much and makes the knife look kind of cheep. The old etching has more Class to it.
Glad I have one of the old ones.

FWIW, Id like to give my vote to the old style also. It was a selling point for me.

And while Im at it I also like the old style engraving on the Native tang area compared to the new 440 ones. At least put the "USA Earth" back on them.

Now that I've seen it...YUK!
It's so obtrusive it negates anything likable about that "bug" in the handle. Glad I've got both the plain and serrated versions in the "old" better looking style. To each their own though.

I agree with Flood. I picked up #87 today and it is very impressive compared to the six other Military's I've owned. Thanks lokelani.

I like em both, don't mind the darker new look, appreciate the subtley of the old.

I really like my two Forum Militarys. The engraving is not such an important issue to me.

It looks good!

Recently I showed both models of the Military to quite a few of my friends who are all up and coming knifenuts.
The oppinions were quite one-sided in that the newer model looks and feels(yes feels) cheaper than the older model.
Mr Glesser, I do apologize for the harsh words but I must ask: "Why the change?"
Haven't you heard the expression, "If it aint broke, don't fix it"?

Personally, I am of the opinion that any "writing" on a blade should be limited to the maker's mark (stamped neatly and unobtrusively near the tang.), and perhaps the steel grade and serial number if applicable. Leave the blades sterile. One of the main reasons that I do NOT own a Military or Police is that the big-assed names on the blades, whether etched, or worse permanently engraved make the knives look a little lame, in addition to making me feel like a wannabe poser. (Oooohh look at Mr. POLICE man!!) I'm sure we've all seen and scoffed at endless POS knives with their names boldly embossed on the blades (Colt "Detective Special" comes to mind at the moment...)

On the other hand, logo-type markings like those on the Starmate, Gunting and Chinook are OK I guess, since they have an artistic aspect and add to the overall package...

All you people who bought the new Military and don't like it, I have a remedy. Sell them to me for half price and you won't have to complain about them anymore.
