What's up with the smilies lately?

Seems like the Smiley library has gotten corrupted. All kinds of wierd pics from adammichael's press thread are showing up where smilies should be.

What's the deal?

Sounds to me like your cache went a little haywire.
Try deleting you cookies and cache and I am betting the situation will be fixed.

That's a Firefox problem. Clean out your cache and that will fix it until the next time it happens. Then clean out your cache again. No doubt the Firefox people will fix it eventually; in the meantime it doesn't seem to be too much of a hassle to clean out your cache now and then.
