What's ur Favorite Fiddleback

I don't have one yet, but someday I want a Runt as my first Fiddleback. Andy was incredibly patient with a bunch of stupid questions I had when I started out in the business side of knifemaking not long ago and of like to be able to repay that a little someday.

Man, some great pics. I love seeing EDC's as folks favorite too. ITs never been a model with tons of demand, but its a good knife.

My favorite right now is the Handyman. Maybe the swayback. Oh. Thats still on paper...

Sneak peak :)

The one I've been looking at is A2. How much different is the steel in A2 vs O1? I think either I'll be happy with, I've never had a knife in either one so I'm curious.

I'm sorry if I'm taking away from this awesome thread for stuff that I'm sure is answered throughout the forum.

A2 is very similar to 01 except with added chromium and molybdenum. The net effect is longer edge retention and greater resistance to rust. The trade off is larger carbides interspersed in the grain of the steel, which may effect the perceived sharpness of the final edge and may also increase the probability of edge chipping under lateral stress on a thin bevel. 01 is also considered to be slightly easier to sharpen, in the sense that it will feel softer under a stone, the burr will be apparent by touch, and less passes will be required to reprofile a blade that is damaged or too thick.

The trademark spalting on the flats of Fiddlebacks tends to be more striking on A2 in most cases, but the patina can get really wild on 01.

Both are solid from the maker. In my experience, if you are not accustomed to sharpening or honing a blade, the A2 blades tend to feel sharper from the shop and should stay that way awhile.

Thanks Triple T. I love a good patina on a knife. I've got mostly 1095's, s30v's, CPM3v's, and some CPM20cv's. I do pretty well I think on those. I just ordered a strop (after the one I made was a wash) so I'm waiting till I get that before I get any convex edge knifes. I've heard its a lot easier to maintain edges, like the fiddle back, on a strop.

I been lurking for a little while around here and I think this is a wonderful, knowledgeable, and helping community. I love the informative post and just all around demeanor of this crowd. Thanks for your help.

Great stuff guys. I've mentioned it many times before, but my favorite (though all FBs are my favs) is also my first THE BC~ This particular one has a cherry crotchwood handle, 1/8 01 TT. I've taken the secondary bevel a bit higher, one of my best cutters indeed.

This one

(CPM S35VN Recluse) that I inherited from a friend after he was killed in a car accident.
It is also one of Andy's most versatile designs. Been bringing it with me to places it's original owner would have liked to visit.

My favorite model is ladyfinger. I have it in burgundy-black burlap ( someday above has hadiman similar material).
My 2 most frequently used - ladyfinger and shank in od camo micarta
I like my edc-2 in bocate ( and 5-6others)

Just celebrated my birthday yesterday sitting on a nightshift and I was thinking about my favorite fiddleback and how I'd like to get into the woods with it instead of sitting there. I only have one and it's my Hiking Buddy that I've had for 2 years now as my woods companion. Amazing in every way.

This is my current favorite because it's my first and only Fiddleback. I will be getting another before the end of the year I'm sure... Just waiting for the right one...

Patch with eucalyptus burl.

Really a very nice gesture.

He was a great guy, loved the mountains and being outdoors. Used to post here a bit as Nightfly.

I do remember him posting a bit. Do you happen to know prior to that name if he went by "jnphares" on the forum?
The reason I ask is that I sold the sibling S35VN recluse to jnphares a few years back and then he dropped off the grid. Didn't know if there was an association and he just changed his screen name. I am sorry about your friend. I'm sure he very well appreciates your gesture.

Here is an old photo. If anyone happens to know where this blade is or if you have it and want to part with it, hit me up. I've always regretted selling this one.

I have a handful of fiddlebacks now. My most recent purchase was the handyman. Until getting this handyman, the hiking buddy was my favorite. The handyman is going to take its place, without a doubt. Love it.

Not as far as I know. Andy made 2 for the batch mine was in, but not the one you had.
