What's with all the deleting of posts

One of my pet peaves is to go back and try to cross reference a knife's description or fair market value, only to find the information deleted after the deal was struck. It's a royal pain in the butt and worse, I've been guilty of it in the past as well.
How are we to be able to go back to a description if we end up getting something that we're sure wasn't what was described? Also, how can we research a fair market value on a used knife if folks are constantly deleting what they were originally asking for it?
I just don't get it. What is the point of deleting that information unless there are games associated with it that don't belong here?
That's my rant, I'd love some input. (Last time I asked for input I pretty much came off looking like an idiot but it was well worth the learning experience so what the hell?)

I agree with you, when the deal is done, leave the info up. When a knife is sold, leave the price up and ADD in bold letters SOLD.

I agree. The only thing that I have found when I have a long list of items for sale or trade is that after awhile its better to delete the list of items that are gone. It makes it easier for the prospective buyer/trader to find whats still available. I guess another option would be to have a seperate thread for each knife (or maybe several knives). But I like having just one list. I try to keep info as long as possible...but...

I would like to see the original sale offer information and subsequent amendments left unchanged. I feel that the original information provides basic information that helps my learning process and furthers my efforts to become more knowledgable and effective in my buying and trading within the Blade Forums community.

I also see some validity in the opposing argument of those who advocate the removal of that information after the sale to protect the privacy of their sell/buy/trade activity in their perceived self-interest.

My feeling, however, is that the overall best interests of those Blade Forum members who buy/sell/trade here are best served by leaving the original information intact.

It is easy enough just to put SOLD before and after each item as it is sold. It only takes a few seconds.

Leaving the description and asking price posted for future reference is a great idea as far as I am concerned. In fact, I have always left all the reductions in price that I have done posted as well.

I have seen some people post that they like to see the price deleted on knives they have bought because if they got a good deal, it hurts their ability to get a higher resale price for it. I can understand this as far as the price the knife sold for is concerned, but leaving the original asking price up should not present a problem.

By the way Doc, you did not look like an idiot at all, just someone that was looking for other's thoughts on a purchase you made.

Kieth,
Thanks for the kind words. I may not have looked like an idiot, but in retrospect, I felt like one. I blew my top way too early in that deal without thinking things through or even waiting to hear back from, what turned out to be a great guy with patience enough to let me vent and then come back to straighten out the deal.
Razor gets an A+ in my book for tolerance alone.

Just recently got blew out of the water with a topic such as this one. I pointed out one such deleted posting, and that person took it to heart although I was using that post only as an example. Well, of course, the pile on started which is typical here began which I am partly to blame. I was even threatened with the person saying that he would not deal with me. Anyway, I did not take it personally, and I just figured he was blowing off steam. Furthermore, I may not have gotten my point across as I wanted it too, and it could have rubbed the wrong way.

Spark has already made it clear that once a knife is sold or what ever that the topic starter reserves the right to delete the post or whichever parts of the post he or she sees fit to delete. End of story. Big D1

Just my 2 cents, & I have left all of my pricing info & descriptions up but what I have found in dealing on the forums or on a personal level that it has made it to where certain people consider the low ball price that sometimes happen on the for sale forum as a standard to start from rather than a fair market price! an example I have heard goes like this on a SOCOM Elite auto that Retailed for about 359.00 & because of scrupeleless dealers selling at wholesale or very close to wholesale when I tried to sale a NIB knife at 185.00 I get comments like well I just saw one sell on the forums for blah blah blah....I think that is why people delete their prices.I think we should work more on getting thes guys that sell 10 to 20 knives a week on to the dealer forums rather than getting upset because the pricing info is gone, if you want to know fair market value ask on one of the general forums, people are for the most part honest.Just my 2 cents sorry for the rant but the whole dealers running down the market value of these knives is kinda pissing me off regular guys pay close to retail deside they want something else & can not sale any knife close to what they payed for it because of some jerk opperating out of a u-store it with no overhead killing the market sucks.

When I sell a knife I usually XXX out the price. The reason is simple enough, people who have bought my stuff have asked me to. When the transaction has ended, I believe the buyer has the privelege of having both the anonymity of his name and the price. It is also misleading to reference old sales threads to determine a valid price. Just because a for sale thread lists an item for a certain price and is subsequently sold, that doesn't mean that the seller got his price. There could have been major haggling. There are also times when a partial or straight across trade is involved that would skew the estimated values. Plus, relative price is effected by time. Look at what values did when Ken Onion stopped taking names for his customs, or when Ernie Emerson went into semi-retirement on his custom knives. Relative values jumped immediately. It can happen with production prices too if a manufacturer announces a knife is out of production. Sometimes manufacturers have lowered their prices or took limited production items and went ahead and made more than originally stated. Using an old thread would not give an accurate number for a current value on a mint knife in any of these cases.
By the way, I think to infer or assume that someone deleted his prices as a way of doing something wrong or immoral is both paranoid and asinine. I have never, I repeat, NEVER made a profit on a knife I have sold here. Sometimes I have lost more than other times. That is part of the deal when changing out your collection or having to liquidate it for cash in times of need.
Car dealers remove the price stickers before the buyer leaves the lot in his new ride. As a former realtor, I can tell you that to leak the final agreed on price on a property before it is recorded at the registrar of deeds will get you fired and possibly get your license revoked. It simply is not the business of anybody but the buyer and the seller what the final value of the transaction was, whatever the item.
