what's with the innertubes?

in sevberal posts, I've seen what appears to be ~1" cross-sections of bicycle innertubes stretched around sheaths similar to a rubberband.

I could see the point in an IWB EDC situation to provide friction to keep the sheath from slipping out with the knife, similar to using split leather on IWB holssters, but past that, I got nothing.

Anybody know what I'm rambling about?

was curious the purpose for them?

thanks,

i think i know what your talking about, they use those so that they can store things under them

In the unlikely event of a water landing, your sheath may be used as a floatations device... </flight attendant>

Yep. Some have shown items stored under the bands such as fire starters, fatwood, and LED lights. There are other things as well but I do not remember them all right now.

I EDC a Folt's Minimalist necker. The sheath has a bit of inner tube which retains a Photon Freedom light. :)

they are commonly referred to as ranger bands.....they are used for many things. think of them as super rubber bands.....

Yes, they are referred to as ranger bands. They are used to hold things in place, or to keep something together or shut. I use them for a lot of things.

I put them around my zippo's when we go rafting or am in a position that they might get wet. It will keep the water out unless you open it up alot with wet hands then i think it starts to wick in. I've also got a ton on all of my maglights....helps with grip and...i have them if i ever need them i guess.

They are called "Ranger Bands." They have a number of uses. The two main ones I use them for are holding crap in place on my gear and as a damn good fire starter.

Slide one on the slippery end of a maglite. You'll be surprised at the difference.

Thats why I always advocate having a chunk of some sort of tire in your your EDC, BOB,BOV and your SHTF gear (if you have that much gear.) Having some rubber that you can burn to help maintain a fire or provide thick black smoke for rescue can be vital. Rubber tends to burn for long periods of time and can be fairly light all things considered.

Ranger bands, Para cord, duct tape ftw. However you should always have a chunk of rubber in your gear....And I am NOT talking about the um... "Personal" type. :D
