What's Wrong With Gerber?

Nope but there are people here who do not see value in knive that do not have big price tags. Gerber also has great customer after sales service, and stand behind their product.

Also just becase say a retailer like Wal-Mart sell Gerber, and other value point knives. It does not made value point knives bad.

I haven't encountered those people. I'll have to keep an eye out for them. The ones I see say that cheap, bad knives, like Gerber, are bad. I agree with them. And they say that cheap, good knives (like Opinel) are good. Also agree with them.

First we need to define "bad", any knife is better than no knife.

Bear Gryills if he had a choice of his choice of survival knives, would choose what if he ws not a PAID spokesmen for Gerber?

I bought a Gerber emerson alliance auto. This would be one of there military models, so I assume it was made in the US. I don't want to get into the Made in USA debate, but if it was it had some real issues. When I got it the blade had significant up and down blade play. I sent it back and they fixed it. So I bought another for my son thinking it was an isolated issue, but it had the same play. I figured out, on this one, that you can adjust the pivot and it will take care of the blade play. The bottom line is that I was shocked that those knives would leave QC from any country in that condition

I wouldnt say ANY knife is better than no knife. And Im guessing the people who bought those gerber parangs where the handles fell off the the blade went flying through the woods probably would agree. Look all joking aside, I think the biggest point of contention is the fact that the company is but a shadow of its former self. At one point they represented serious value and materials for the money. These days not so much. I dont think it has anything to do with snobbery as many who wouldnt buy a gerber have no problem buying other lower cost knives.

Personally I think gerber makes good products but they always screw up with an item for the first month or 2, what I mean by this is every gerber product I've researched has had overly bad reviews when the products came out due to major design failures and flaws then gerber takes the info from reviews and fixes the problems people have with the product finally turning them into quality items. I've seen alot of the horror stories about the Bear Grylls series of knives but all of those issues have been worked out and the knives aren't half bad now actually, I've done extensive abuse testing to them just to see how well they stand up and even when I've attempted to damage/break my knife on purpose it laughed at me and kept on going without a scratch.

Bingo they sold out for cheap & poor products, after they had a good reputation. Sound like any other American Companies?

When Gerber built it reputsation they only had a few competators, and most built good products.

Today everyone in the knife business is in competation with the cheap imported junk knive from far away lands, many of witch will not even stay sharp in a storage box....LOL

I own a few Gerbers, all US made. I have an EZ-Out and an old Bolt Action and the quality is great. I also have 4 LSTs that I've purchased over the years, this first in the late 80's. The quality and edge holding ability on all is good. The LST, for it's size, is one of the best folders you can buy. The only real change I've noticed in the oldest LST has a nice square spine and works quite well on fire steel, the on the newer ones the spine is rounded off, but otherwise they are fine. On their website Gerber does clearly identify where their knives originate from.

I think the fact that the only knife I've ever owned that the lock completely failed on, and thus the only knife that's ever "bit" me bad enough to need stitches, was a Gerber Remix says all I need to say about the company and its current product quality.

I lost a leatherman Squirt PS4 at the airport one day, and had a giftcard to Cabelas... They didn't have any squirts, so I picked up the Dime... For what it is, it does just fine... I will say this, everything about the Dime feels less durable and less substantial than my PS4... I will get a new one some day, and give the Dime to my son...
