I am wondering why I spend money on knives that I ultimately don't keep? I pine over blades of all kinds and end up giving them away. Why is that?

The thrill of the purchase also sharing the joy with others.
"Well there goes my knife, time for a replacement!" ;)

I gave a brand new coldsteel recon 1 spear point Cts-Xhp to my son's friend last night when we picked my son up to take him to our new place in Nebraska. It was a satisfying feeling to be sure. I still just haven't quite found "the one" yet.....

I sometimes turn over a knife or two, but I don't give them away. I either trade them for more knives, or sell them and buy more knives. As to what is "wrong" with you, overly generous? Nothing wrong with that as long as the people you gift are important to you and deserving in your eyes.

I usually give a knife to a non knife person. It's like being an apostle and showing others "the way".

Sometimes you see the moment of complete conversion.......

Hopefully, in time, you will find a few, maybe one knife, :D, that will hold you at bay.
Jill gave great advice.
I "think" I finally found that one, all purpose knife.

Purchasing luxury items releases dopamine, it quite literally chemically makes you happy. Personally, I just enjoy the rush, use 'em how I want and then sell, trade or gift them once I realize I've moved on.

I'm kind of the same way, though like Rolf I recently restructured my knives and have settled on two (I think) that will keep me happy for a long time.

OP, do you have a good knife shop near you? I don't, and sometimes I think that it's just a matter of needing to hold and experience a knife. I think I'd spend a lot less time online and that I'd order a lot less knives if I could run over to the shop and handle a bunch.

As others have said, I wouldn't worry about it. I think that part of the hobby is trying out/checking out new designs, features, brands, etc. If you can then turn around and give another enthusiast a good price or gift a knife to someone, then all the better! I recently let got of a ZT 0566 for cheap, but it made the guy really happy. I also just gifted a Lon Humphrey to a friend of mine who was floored by it. If I'm not using a knife, making someone happy always seems better than keeping it in the drawer...

I love all the ones I buy, I don't buy on impulse, usually it takes me awhile to buy. Took me 25 years to get a Sebenza.

As for what's wrong with you? I'm not qualified to say but personally I don't see anything wrong.

I think it is in the buying; it's fun. I guess we're all looking for "the one". That may happen.... for a while and then it's back to looking and buying.
