What's wrong with the term 'pocket knife'?

Ah, Paracelsus... the Socrates of sarcasm.

Here's the deal: folding knives with an opening mechanism (hole, stud, disk) and clip are generally refered to as "tactical", while folding knives that are sans clip and cannot be opened with one hand are generally refered to as "pocket" knives. If you don't like this, your best option is to commit suicide because it ain't gonna change.

Cerulean,

I tried that. What do do think resulted in my being Here anyway? The Socratic treatment really sucks. I'd rather take my medication.

Paracelsus

ha, ha... damn. I may occasionally write "LOL", but I very rarely actually laugh out loud at something I read on the internet. VG and now Paracelsus are the only two who can really bowl me over this way.

Trying to get back on topic, I hate the word "tactical", but so what? That word has firmly established itself in the knife community and it will never leave. You can cry a river, but the term "tactical knife" is going to stay around for a long time.

Getting angry at words is like getting angry at dirt. What are you going to do? The only thing you can do is try to get in on the next wave. I don't know what the next fad in knives is going to be, but I hope to God that forum members get to name it!

Edit- I should really use a spell checker.

Time for a serious reply to the question:

I collect mostly fixed blade hand-made knives. But mostly for financial reasons, my daily carry knives are production pieces. Some of these are traditional patterns (whittler and stockman), some are what are usually called gentleman's folders (e.g. BM 850), and a couple are definitely in the 'tactical folder' camp (BM710 and Kershaw Ken Onion Random Task). I call them All 'pocketknives' because that's where I carry them. And I don't like the term 'tactical folder' at all.

I think that MTF3 is right we are just dating ourselves, with the term "pocket knife."
Even the makers of pocket knives call them "multi-blades." It's just not cool, or hip, or with it, or whatever term these young whipper snappers are using these days. In fact the only one that I know of that can use the term, "pocket knife," and still be COOL is, "crazed wild techno-injun gal..." Silverwing.

PhiL and Paracelsus, you guys crack me up. i step away from the computer for a day or so to do that Offline Life thang, and you guys start throwing my name around like it was a balisong! "dr. silverwing" indeed! LOL! "dr. strangewing" is more like it...

you guys better take it easy on me or my head's gonna swell so big i'm gonna hafta buy the XXXXXL size monitor cuz my ol' 19" will seem like a barbie-doll screen...

paracelsus, your posts from The Home are so great that i have no intention of messing with your meds. why would i want to go and spoil everyone's fun? however, i will send in that guy from the Sports Chalet, he obviously is WAAAYY far gone and would benefit greatly from a stint as your roomie in The Home.

as for the actual TOPIC of this thread...my dad asked for a swiss army knife for christmas and i begged my mom to let me be the one to pick it out for him. when she said, "but you don't know anything about knives!" i told her that i collected "pocket knives"... her response was, "oh...yeah, i hear that there are a lot of different kinds of swiss army knives. how many of them do you have?"

she equates "pocket knives" with SAK, and for her, there aren't any other kind. i think she imagines my bureau drawers filled with little red things, all lined up in rows, according to size...

dad is getting a super tinker. i think santa is bringing me a william henry or a david boye but no "real" pocket knives, according to my mother's view...hee hee...

There she is. Just like Batman with the Bat Signal.
Silverwing, you think Paracelsus and i are here just to amuse you, what are we like clowns or something?

Your Mom's like a lot of people, SAK's are pocket knives. Very distinctive, what else looks like a SAK? They are everywhere, in their own seperate display case. I bet if you said. Case or Buck, Mom wouldn't think of knives first. You say Swiss Army, and anyone will fill in KNIFE. Heck, what else is the Swiss Army known for?

Thank you, Paracelsus! All this time I have been wondering why the pholder phanatics call real knives "fixed blades" and now I finally understand! They think our knives used to be broken in the middle like theirs, only we got ours fixed!

Those pocket knives sound useful to me -- I keep finding shirts in my closet that don't have any pockets for some reason -- I'll have to get one of those pocket knives and fix that....

there are some mighty clever folks here on the forum and it never ceases to amaze me how many times i gotta close the folder i'm playing with just so's i can laugh my head off safely. (my mom's not here so i can say "folder" and not "pocket knife")

i have particular admiration for folks who can be hilarious AND full of good knife info, like you, sir PhiL, and VG, and Jim March, and all the rest of you. i came here to learn more about knives; i stayed because you are all such fine and fun people...

but you know, i thought the Bat Signal was for VG...i think my signal's more like a dreamcatcher with a RAM chip hanging in the middle of it, or something like that...

Have you visited Vamp at Community?
Silverwing, visit the Ladies Room first, just a word of warning. He is the Master.

For those of you that not only use the term, "pocket knives," but love the more traditional patterns. I would like to suggest a visit to; http://www.jbrucevoyles.com/
I had at first thought they were way above my price point, considering some of the pieces that they handle. Also that I'm not experianced enough to go head to head, bidding at an Auction, with serious collectors. That's not the case. They have a section, seperate from the auctions, where you can buy direct, without bidding.

They have pieces in just about every price point. I found a real bargain for myself. I was considering the other night, a Customized Buck #110, from their Custom Shop. I was looking at stag scales with either a BG42 or damascus blade, at over $100. I found instead at Bruce Voyle's, a Parker Edwards 5" lockback, stag and damascus for $50. I ordered it on Thurs. it arrived today, I'm very pleased. Gus K. was kind enough, to get me some info. on the knife, to confirm what I believed to be a pretty good deal. You should check it out, very nice site, lots of stuff to look at, very affordable.
