What's ya minimum kit ?

DSCN0782.jpg

What's the finger for? That could do some serious nose pickin' fireside!

Nice kit you have assembled!

My newest and smallest mountain bashing setup is roughly this, in a Gregory diablo 6:
First aid: nitrile gloves, Ace bandage, 3x3/2x2 gauze, steri-strips, white tape, benadryl, re-hydration salts (hydro-lite)
Fire: RAT firesteel with the bar replaced with a LMF Army drilled and tapped. In the capsule is charcloth and wetfire tinder, spare wetfire, mini-bic.
Other: 2-3 cliff bars, 2L water bladder (depending on the weather, the water can go fast, and so far most of the people I know that have run into trouble, it has been due to lack of water) Whistle, mirror, bandanna(spare) chapstick, AMK emergency bivy (the little one), assorted paracord, static cord, webbing and caribiners, couple sheets water-proof paper, sharpie
Steel, Vic alox soldier, or case med stockman, Izula or RC-3, and maybe BM grip depending on the day. And an AH-1, haven't used it yet, but I want to!

This is my short dayhike kit, I would add a cup and alky stove if there was a good chance of needing to re-supply water.
It is a bunch, but given that there are few places I can hike that are not over-run with tourists, and they are often unprepared. I'd hate to not be able to help someone when I could easily have had what I needed, and really whats a couple pounds on a hike anyway?

I assume my minimum kit is what I bring on short hikes in places I know well enough...
- SAK (One hand trekker)
- Bic lighter (or similar)
- water (1-2 litres)
- compass/whistle/mirror/small flashlight (like a Mag solitaire)
- small first aid kit
- some paracord

My minimum kit is mosty what I already have on me in my pockets, Plus a stainless-steel waterbottle.
Graham Stubby Razel w/ a Nanostriker, Sunnto Clip Compass, LED flashlight, fishing line, hooks sinker, whistle, safety pins (all ranger-banded to the knife's sheath).
Leatherman Juice KF4 (saw, file, and awl are really usefull for woodcraft)
Fresnel lens and duct tape (always in the wallet)
lighter (i'm a smoker)
bandana
12 feet of braided paracord and a Vic classic on my keychain

If I'm out for a run on my usual trails(even calling them trails is a bit of a stretch, they're packed gravel, and I've seen city maintenance vehicles driving through before), I usually don't bring more than my ipod. I wouldn't mind putting together a necker kit for this kinda thing because I hate things bouncing in my pockets while I'm running, but I'm not super worried about it. Pretty much all along the trail I'm within shouting/crawling distance of either houses, or a fairly busy street should something happen.

When I'm out walking my dog on those same trails I'll just have my EDC stuff: SAK, flashlight, phone, wallet, keys, etc.

If I'm going for more of a hike, or am going to be out for more than an hour or so, I'll usually have a backpack with some water, FAK, extra layer, PSK, folding saw, some snacks, probably a fixed blade of some sort, etc.

The longer the hike, the more stuff that comes with of course. Hatchet, food, additional survival gear and whatnot all get added as I see fit.

for the situation the op presented.

I think a knife, firesteel, and a compass is all you need

water and snacks be nice too...depending how fast a pace you are going

Minus a firesteel and SAK, add a bandanna and water bottle and you basically have my kit there Pit.

I carry everyone in an EMS butt pack. I believe it's called the fire jumper or something. I keep sol 2 person emergency blanket, military surplus hammock, run of the mill fire kit, aquamiri straw, small bottle of iodine 2%, sometimes a slingshot w/ ball bearings, folding takedown shovel I've modified slightly, small first aid kit, wet wipes, poncho, multi tool, marine kabar, budk neck knife, few cliff bars, small camping roll of tp, small monocular, roll of wire, 50ft paracord, petzl headlamp, cheapo mini led flashlight, nalgene bottle, GSI folding steal cup, ems bandana compressed to the size of a silver dollar(really cool) sometimes MSR pocket rocket but not usually. A few other little odds and ends but all fits into the butt pack and doesnt need a shoulder strap and is pretty light. I know I'm leaving out some stuff but it's not anything much different thing most guys day pack type deal I don't have pictures because this dam iPad won't let me post any and I just haven't taken any and got the laptop from my office and loaded them.

Minimum kit for me is sometimes absolutely no gear, but a lot of times it's a mora and a firesteel.
Going anywhere but a commonly used trail with the dog I will take my maxpedition water bottle kit.

I'm working on trying to minimize thought these days. Seriously, between work, kids, aging parents, house falling down and old cars, I carry too many details in my brain. Changing what I carry when I walk in the woods is just too much work. I have a fanny pack of "10 Essentials" that goes with me on a hour walk before hel^H^H^Hwork or a winter camping trip. This reduces my decision to one. Is my fanny pack with me?

This is more of an escape and evasion kit, but it’s what i have with me at all times, even when I’m out in the Sierra. The contents of my pocket tin have been evolving over time and from things I have seen on this forum and out in the field.

The small CRKT Ritter MK5 knife is new to my kit. It’s made for this type of pocket survival tin. And the SAR Stainless Dog Tag with Signal Mirror i got at Plaza Cutlery, its the smallest and sturdiest one I have ever seen.

Handcuff key ? I guess you did say escape.

Knife, fire source, water. I am a water hog, so always water, and a vessel for boiling it. That is minimum for local, familiar day hikes and what not. Longer hikes get more kit, obviously.

My minimum kit comes when I am trail running. Running doesn't call for carrying a lot of weight. Even during a long run through the woods I generally only have a knife, a lighter, and some shot bloks (carb/salt loaded gummy chews).

Other situations may vary.

I keep trying but my iPad won't let me upload pictures and I have no idea how to link them with a URL to my photo album, I've tried so many times it's gota be the iPad.

The minimum kit is what I typically carry everyday. That's for around here where I'm familiar with most situations that I might be able to get into. I carry a full size folder (the model varies but its often a Spyderco Endura or Para 2.) I also carry a serrated Spyderco Dragonfly and a Bic lighter at all times. Attached to the Dragonfly is a Fenix LOD AAA flashlight. Then my key chain has a 4sevens Preon PO, a Spyderco Ladybug and a Gerber artifact tool.

This is just what I feel comfortable with when I'm in the woods around here. I try to wear appropriate clothing and feel like I could make it overnight in this area with just the items I listed above.

Bare bones kit here!

It has what I consider to be the important stuff:

-Fire
-General Navigation
-Signaling (whistle/dog tag signaling mirror
-Water purification
-Cutting tool

extras:
-Light
-Duct tape (first aid/repairs)
