What's your approach to possessions?

I have tried to whittle down my possessions. Books I know I wont read again, given away. Same with clothes I don't fit into anymore. Knives that sit for too long, given or traded away. And I still feel like I have too much stuff.

But I'm still compelled to browse knife catalogs, VW accessories and stores in search of books, CDs and DVDs. There must be a balance somewhere.

Nothing wrong with the sheath it came with. Just a big problem with the idiot that forgot to take a belt camping with him and figured he could get by with sticking it in a hip pocket!

Order a 10"X20" or larger shed and move it into your backyard.

Go to your local Goodwill and Flea Markets and start accumulating empty suitcases.

Put your keepable stuff in the suitcases and label each case with what is in it on a piece of blue masking tape and magic marker from Walmart and store the suitcases in the shed.Suitcase label examples are:Knives/Books/Ammo/Misc stuff/Fishing gear/Camping gear/
Kitchen stuff/etc.

Keep several empty suitcases marked "Flea Market" in the shed. From time to time rummage thru the Keepable stuff and move some of it into the "Flea Market" suitcases.Have a flea market sale once or twice a year and what is left over can be dropped off at your local goodwill or salvation army store. You will also benefit by ebaying in addition to fleamarketing.

I found that reducing my possessions became a living cyclic adventure that continues over and over with the passage of time.

I believe that a man who has a strong "collector" mentality, a euphemism for someone who really experiences pain when extracting himself from his things, could probably get along with a shed and 25
suitcases. I am down to a shed and 10 suitcases. ;)

"Actually this is just a place for my stuff, ya know? That's all, a little place for my stuff. That's all I want, that's all you need in life, is a little place for your stuff, ya know? I can see it on your table, everybody's got a little place for their stuff. This is my stuff, that's your stuff, that'll be his stuff over there. That's all you need in life, a little place for your stuff. That's all your house is: a place to keep your stuff. If you didn't have so much stuff, you wouldn't need a house. You could just walk around all the time."

That is brilliant. :D

This is a great thread topic IMO.

I try and purge my stuff about 2x a year in the spring and in the fall. Coincides with getting out/putting away summer/winter clothes.

My tastes lean towards big open rooms without a lot of stuff in them. I also try to minimize available open surfaces/counter tops upon which stuff naturally collects. This has been the best thing I've done as far as keeping a clean space.

The added bonus to minimal counter top space is that when they do get cluttered, they only take a few minutes to get back to normal.

That's my .02

You obviously have "issues."

Space is for "things." If there are no "things" in your spaces, then, by definition, you have "no thing" there. Having nothing there represents a void in the balance of the planet, and ultimately, the universe. Hence (I love saying "hence") your "nothing" void creates a burden on others to compensate in order to keep the equilibrium of the cosmos. This is true of the planet, and, as mentioned, the cosmos. You then are creating a burden of compensation for Aliens on other worlds, (like they don't have enough problems with space travel and all) to carry additional "stuff" in order for the rules of time/space/quantuum mechanics/string theory/strong force-weak force/unified theory of everything (pant, pant) to apply and not screw up THEIR journeys. No wonder they come down here and want to conduct anal probes...has nothing to do with science, they're just annoyed with us.

Get help.

No wonder the aliens are always pissed when they show up at my house.

I will buy more, I promise.

From now on when Yangdu writes "email to get any or all," it is now my responsiblity to email for "all." I will do this every chance I get.

Sorry sharks, blaim it on Kismet.

:D

Possesions are like an alligator in a fish tank, they'll only get as big as the thing you keep it in allows it to get.

I have a 200' X 40' 2 story block barn with an 8" poured concrete floor and a 3 car garage underneath.

I have way too much stuff, 15 cars, a bunch of motorcycles, 25 barn doors, 7 or 8 coal stoves 15 -20 bikes, tools, pianos, giant xmas ornaments from the mall, stuff, stuff and more stuff.

How am I gonna deal with it all, leave it for my kid to sort out, just like my Mom's gonna do to me.

At least my stuffs in one place, my Mom's spread out between the east coast and the midwest, in about 5 different states.

interesting thread. I just moved my house to another house and boy, do I have a lot of stuff...

boxes and boxes of ammo and gun stuff, not to mention guns.

khukuris of course

boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of books

just plain stuff

flashlights and related things (chargers, batteries, etc. etc.)

pipes and tobacco (two big boxes)

I am such a hoarder...

it took two moving van loads to move our stuff.

I'm not sure this is a good thing or not...but it is the way I am.
