At a powwow near Lancaster PA several years ago, I spotted what looked like a handmade knife sitting on a vendors table. Seeing as it was surrounded by Smokey Mountain knife works junk, I still decided to take a gamble on it (no markings). The vendor owner announced $60. A really nice looking Hudson Bay camp knife. No idea if it was an original, a Dixie Knife Works kit knife etc. I traded a Buck Vanguard and a few other knives, including a Chinese Blackjack Grunt. I had a great time at the powwow regardless, and was the proud owner of a really nice Hudson Bay camp knife, Chief model no less, I found out. I used the knife several times clearing brush in the woods. Great knife, razor sharp. I took it with me to Scott Gossman's campout the following month, with the hopes of asking the knowledgeable knife collectors there who made it, and asking Scott to sharpen it for me. At dusk, surrounded by members of Bladeforums and Hoodlums, among other forums, Scott took a look at it and started laughing like hell. It was a knife made by the late Terry Baublitz, and Scott had reprofiled the edge for its previous owner. I actually traded/bought an Idaho Knife Works Hudson Bay model from the same previous owner at Scott's next campoutand brought the HBC chief model to for the previous owner to see.
One of my favorite knives, which compelled me to learn more about the famed HBC, and some great history to it. Began my love affair with Hudson Bay knives.
