What's your choice in a 1911 style .45?

Being an armed guard, I was faced with a lot of questions. My Grandad is a WW2 & Korea Vet and has his issued piece. Its a little crude by todays standards, but still solid. Personally, I carry a P-226 from Sig-Sauer in .40S&W. I recently got to try their 1911 variant. Its very, VERY nice, especially with Kimbers quality seeming to slip a little as of late; However Im a HUGE Sig fan.
I say try em all. Hell, try everything you can get your paws on. One of my co-workers carries a Jericho (Baby Desert Eagle). Very nice piece as well.
Recently, Ive taken to carrying a CZ52 at places where I dont want my Sig to get beat up. This is also a solid no-frills gun for 140 dollars shipped to my door with some extra parts and pieces. The thing to remember is that you MAY be forced to fire from an unorthodox position, so you may want to consider your abilities. I load with Corbons at work which my boss frowns upon slightly. A smaller calibre gun than a 1911, with a specialized load may be better suited to your situation. Not trying to dissuade you from a gun, but keep your options open. You may find that youre more comfortable with a P226, Glock 20, Walther PK or maybe even a wheelgun with speedloader. Its better to find a gun that fits you than try to fit yourself to a gun. Try everything, its a great excuse for range time and playing with toys.

Most firearms confrontations are at short distances anyway (within 40 feet according to some estimates) and if the assailant is within 20ft of you and intends to do you harm, you more than likely wont be able to draw and fire in time [Tuler's(sp?) Law]. I reccomend any tactical courses you can find as well as memorizing law and learning their practical applications/implications

Let us know what you choose and anything else you get to play with, I'll give you style points for going with a Peacemaker and 10gallon hat :D

Hmmm, peacemaker and 10 gal hat... kinda like that! Was just at the range today, shot a full sized Kimber and full sized Springfield. Both were very nice and managable, with little difference between the two. Also shot a commander (?) sized Springfield with Hogue grips. A bit more kick to it, and only a 6 round clip. I also shot a Sig P220 and liked it alot, but still am leaning towards a 1911 style gun. My wife's friend who's family owns the gun shop can get me a decent deal on a used gun, but I'll go into that cautiously. I know she won't steer me wrong though.

Depends which Springer, depends on whether you are keeping the gun stock or going to "smith it" for stock go for the Springfield operator, for smithing later on go for the springer GI Mil Spec. Kimber quality is slipping, plastic MSH - unacceptable on a gun at that price, problems with their MIM parts.

I agree about the Mil-Spec. I have two of them and they both shoot great! I do have a couple of Loaded models that are extremely accurate as well.

The plastic MSH doesn't belong on a 1911 in my opinion. I've changed out the ones that came on my Colt pistols.

Dangit... now I have to ask a stoopid 1911 newbie question: what on earth is "plastic MSH"?
I couldn't tell much of a difference between the full sized Kimber and the SA, though I liked the SA's sights better. I plan on getting at least white dot sights on what ever I get though. Interestingly enough, I did have at least one failure to feed on all three 1911's I shot. Granted, I was shooting range reloads... I'm sure they were banged up a little.
