What's your criteria for NOT EVER using a knife??

the only time i don't use a knife for stuff is when there are kids around who might not know better and imitate me (getting hurt in the process) :)

hey there. how bout sharing some of that lotto luck with your fellow brend fans, tique.

$50 or $1,000 I will use the knife as long as I know it can be refurbished to LIKE NEW condition if I sent it off to someone :)

I personally don't buy knives so they can sit. I went from $50 walmart kershaws to $305 Sebenza. I use my benza for everything I can.

The only criteria I would not use a knife would be for historical or personal value. My grandma gave me a knife from her grandfather...and its not going anywhere.

Good point. I use my Rinaldi Enigma, and I know it can be retouched easily. However, my new bowie is damascus, and if I ruined the etch it would be quite a task to redo everything.

can you drop some names & numbers for me here or in my pm box? thanks.

Usually the "someone" that can refinish the knife to like new condition is the maker of said knife.

And anonymous, being friends with Walter has it's benefits:D

I won't spend money on a blade I won't use, not yet anyway. I get far more enjoyment from a blade I use than one that is only good as eye candy (nothing wrong with eye candy though). If I ever start to make more money I may get some collectibles though. Another criteria I have for not using or owning a blade is low quality. No way I'll be caught dead using a $3 Spyderco knockoff in any but the most dire circumstances!

I have several Buck limited editions that have either fancy blade etching or laser designs cut in the blade that are not used. Other than that everything else is fair game.

i'll keep you guys posted about IF i use my duncan aftershock (1 more month before it arrives).

don't hold your breath.

PERSONALLY...I've never really understood the disdain that sometimes creeps through from posters who state: "I use ALL my knives...I wouldn't buy a knife I would not use..." Problem is, many follow that with a disclaimer such as, "Well, maybe if I had enough money to buy a [insert name of astronomically expensive knife here], no I wouldn't use THAT!" Well, make up your mind. Either you use ALL your knives or you don't. Cost and historical/personal significance be dammned.

Me, I have very expensive custom art knives that I use and reasonably priced custom art knives that are just to look at. And if real knife "users" think that's silly or wasteful - I could care less.

It's not a matter of disdain, just personal preference. Some people get a lot of enjoyment from knives that they just fondle and display. Some people buy Ferraris and let them sit in the garage. I don't have enough money to do either of those things. I'm basically just a little kid who never grew up when it comes to my toys; I want to play with them, not just look at them! Perhaps the collectors of safe queens out there are just more adult than me. It's nothing more than a difference of interests, the same way some people prefer drop points to bowies. Neither is wrong, they're just different.

Roadrunner:

I don't think it is a matter of being more adult at all.

It's more a matter of excess spendable cash and the joy of owning something that will increase in value.

I have users and I have collectors [ safe queens ]. Each bought for different reasons and with different goals in mind.

When strapped for cash, they are easily sold for profit quickly, and in fact I've had to do this a few times.

Nice to know there cash is there when you need it or want it and at the same time you are capable of the enjoyment it brings in ownership of such a piece.

I enjoy collecting antique treasure ship Gold Dabloons and "piece of eight" [ pirate treasure ]. As well, I'm known to collect old Colt 45's from ww1 and ww2 in original condition as well as knives.

Take the 45's for example: I have 7 of them. Two get shot extensively, three are collectors of the world wars, two are highcaps, and a glock which gets carried the most for defensive purposes in the last few years.

So you see, I can collect some of the same ones I'll use. All it takes is money and the desiree to own things that are rare yet interesting to you personally.

As to maturity, don't ask my wife about that.

I have a lot that I don't use and price is not a consideration. If I want a user, I buy a knife for that purpose. If I see one that I want to add to the collection/display case, I buy it for that reason. Some of the older switches are collectable, and would make lousy users anyway. Some of the newer models would make great users, buy I did not buy them for that, I bought them as an example of a paticular style of knife for the collection.

You wouldn't be talking about the black "Red Head" that I bought many years ago and only drove at night 'cause I hated being gawked at, would you? LOL! ;) All my friends thought I was nuts. And all my friends were right.

:D

I agree with Hawaiian - price is really not a consideration in what makes it to my EDC rotation. My most "used" knife (and it looks it) is my personal "signature" edition, custom Bud Weston framelock.

In the end, it all boils down to one thing: do whatever makes you happy.
