What's your deep woods defense?

I have been involved with a search & rescue team for 4 years. I have spent quite a bit of time in the woods. For the last year I have been carrying a short-sword which I made. I wrapped the handle and the wooden scabbard entirely in nylon cord. The cord kind of conceals the fact that it is a sword. Most people that I have been teamed with for a search think that it is a walking stick, which suits me fine. They are shocked to find out that I carry a sword when out looking for a missing child. It kind of makes them feel like I am a bad person. They usually change their mind when we get into some seriously thick brush and I am cutting my way thru it.

Anyway, I carry a sword and a midsize fixed-blade knife with me while walking the woods. I have never had to defend myself against a wild animal (even the human kind).
Most of the time the wild critter (human too)
backs down after you assert yourself with a loud, forceful voice and a confident posture.
But, just in case they don't back down, I will be prepared.

Do you hear that?
That is the sound of inevitability.

I usually carry a 6'oak bo, which is a good weapon and has multiple uses on the trail. (And if I get bored I can practice bojutsu on trees.) If that fails I have a good pair of hiking/running boots.

Well Walt, my khukuri may be rather large; but It's too useful not to carry it - even at the risk of being labled as handicapped in the dingus department. *L*

OFF! Deep Woods, or 99.9% DEET, whichever. The most bloodthirsty critters in the wilderness are blackflies, mosquitoes, deer flies, chiggers, ticks, gnats...
Of course, Mr. 12 will handle anything bigger than that here in northern Alberta.

LOL! Why is it that the biting bugs are so much worse in the semi arctic climates? I've heard the same about Alaska in the summer.

I take it Mr. 12 is a shotgun, and not a Randall #12...

That's at least one thing the southwest has in outdoor comfort; No biting bugs in the air!!!

I have a backpacking trip coming up this week in the Superstition wilderness in Arizona. No deet needed there, but I'm bringing my Glock 30.

Mr. 12 is an 870 Winchester. Buck or slugs for the big stuff. Dunno why the bugs are so bad; maybe because they only have a few weeks to feed and breed. There are some types of blackflies that think DEET is just strong Gatorade.

hi
i live near you on a ranch west of magdalena
i do quite a bit of hiking and when i am not on my ranch i carry a folding combat knife(junglee shenzi) and a pair of 20 inch long custom made batons with leather wrapped handals. they are carryed one on each side of my belt (left and right) by two small metal rings with belt fasteners. the batons are just slid thru the rings and a stop that is under the leather wrap catches them. i have also carried these inside the super wal-mart in belen and not been bothered by cops or walmart security. if you want more info or want to know where to get these goodies please e-mail me at rancherman@wetwetwet.com
and i will tell you. they cost about 29 or 30 dollars. the wood is ash(like in a baseball bat) so they can do a lot of damage and not break.
