for a long time i went through coats trying to find what i liked best, tried military trench coats, leather trench coats (had an american made one that was butter soft, cape went down to the elbows, bueatiful. couldnt wear it in public without every single person staring at me.), and then some low end biker jackets as well as pvc/vinyl.

then i started searching for the hardest use jacket available, something to last a lifetime and then some, something to protect against any condition (as much as possible), and through my searching i came to the conclusion that the jacket i got is the best i could have without being a target of public intrigue (and theft). the one that i dreamed about was the langlitz heavy cowhide padded pocket collumbian, with padded elbo's and shoulders, pocket in the sleeve and full pocket set on the chest area.

what i went with instead is the pocket columbian in goatskin w/ leather lined pockets and eapulets. im never going to use the eapulets, but they create a "classic" biker look that makes the jacket blend a little better with the crowd, and i didnt go with the padding for the same reason. and the padding would have made it a little stiffer for daily wear. thing already weighs 9lbs  the goat skin is flexible, yet seriously heavy and thick/strong. it has a slightly higher wear resistence then cowhide, though it isnt as supple to the touch. the only thing i would change about it is the zipper (wich has worn down, this appeared to be an almost daily wear jacket since 88 when i got it). its big enough that i can do some serious layering under it, but not so big that it feels cavernous when i wear it without anything else.

i was interested in a super heavy duty cordura jacket in the same vein of the standard dickies for a while, and have decided that if i ever need a non leather jacket, i'll go with the carhartt artic extreme jacket. i would actually like to own one anyways, but dont really ahve the money for extra gear that im not going to use daily.

so whats your dream jacket/coat (and why?)

I have and love my Vanson Cobra jacket. Hard armor spine in the back. Soft armor shoulder pads and elbow-forearm pads. Heavy leather construction, 4 zippered vents, 2 large zippered inner pockets, and card sized pocket. These jackets are just about as tough as they come and are big enough that I can fit a hoody underneath. The only problem is no hand warmer pockets, but I always carry gloves in my sholder bag.

Mine is like this, but has the gray Vanson logo.

I agree, though I must admit my Vanson jacket cost $800...but I ride a motorcycle and need the protection.

I'm partial to my North Face coat/system. It has a pretty lightweight fleece liner that works nicely as a fall/spring jacket, and it zips into a shell for the winter. Lightweight, lots of pockets, well made, comfy.

well, my langlitz cost 475 after market, and the guy that owned it before me superglued about 50 pins to the lapels... i had to rip the top coat off the to get them off, and had to redie and top coat the entire lapel ... woulda cost 1025ish new... worth ever penny

id like to see a comparison of the cordura jackets available, those 511's do look nice

I've got an Aerostich Darien Jacket. 3/4 length Cordura nylon with Goretex, removable, reversible fleece/nylon liner that can be used by itself as a jacket, LOTS of BIG pockets, and armored elbows and shoulders. If I wanted a back protector and hip pads, I could get those too. It (and the pants) were just as expensive as Nemo's Vanson, but I had a bike as primary transport when I got it, so it was worth it.

Incidentally, if you ride daily and want some good rain covers for your gloves, these are great..

They are called "Triple Digit Rain Covers". Goretex and a thin nylon shell, long enough to go up to your jacket.

I was always too big for supply to find me any gortex, so I went old school with a field jacket through 4 years, including a couple of bitter winters in Korea and Eastern Washington. Layered properly, it took good care of me. Last year I got a Neil Cooper leather (goatskin) M65, and love it. Loaded with pockets, the four standard patch pockets, plus side entry hand warmers, two more inside. I generally consider a coat off body carry, and a bad idea, but I've used one of the pockets for a BUG (G26) with no sagging. Weighs a ton, but that's partly due to all the crap I stuff in the pockets. Came with a bunch of X's in front of the L too, which can sometimes be hard to find. I wish they'd make provisions for a hood, made detachable, couple of buttons under the collar maybe, but other than that it's the best jacket I've ever owned, and a hoody fits under it just fine. Looking forward to the colder weather so I get to wear it again.

I have a couple, depending on the use.
For casual wear, either the top right one here, or the NYPD HWY found on this site.
For working outdoors I have a denim barn coat with an excellent quilted lining. I do wish that Carhart would bring back their quilt-lined barn coat. Well, and make it in my size.

My Aviation Leathercraft USAAF A2.

I think it's still the most expensive single item of clothing I own. I rarely wear it, but when I do, I'm at the controls of my Mustang...

Sickening true anecdote: My father was in the RAF in WW2. In 1944 he was in the control tower at Bari airfield in Italy when a P47 Thunderbolt landed. The pilot ran into the control tower, pausing only to doff his A2 and hang it on the stairs. Moments later, having delivered his urgent message, he ran back to the P47 and roared off for parts unknown.

My father and several other RAF types stared at the A2. It was decorated with a painting on the back. (I don't know what the subject was).

My father won the race...

Years later, he sold it...

Have you any idea what an original, painted, WW2 A2 is worth?

One of my favorites is a Schott motorcycle jacket that I picked up on ebay for $100.00. It's just perfect and goes with nearly everything. I love that jacket.

My other is my new Filson wool mackinaw coat. Damn it's stiff and heavy but so darned cool. I live in San Jose and maybe it will get cold enough to wear it soon. :)

I do have a Fieldsheer Duece jacket size 42 that is brand new that I'm going to put on ebay next week. But, if one of you guys are interested, I'd rather sell it to you. I can get you some dig pics if interested. New, it's $200.00 and I'll let it go for $125.00 plus $10.00 for shipping.

Otter, a friend of mine still has the PPK his grandfather pulled off of a dead German officer, including the holster. I don't have any clue what it's worth, but it's weird to see the swastika on stuff and know that it's not a reproduction.

I have a light jacket and a parka with the company logo that I wear at work. Other than that I just have one of the old Levi jackets with the fake fleece lining.

If the GI ECWS Gore-Tex parka was made in colors, like charcoal gray or something, and had a (preferably stowable) hood that wasn't sized to fit over a kevlar, I'd be in hog heaven. My woodland camo version is my favorite jacket, along with being the single most versatile, and longest lasting piece of clothing I've ever owned. Hard to believe how much abuse mine has seen, with some fading being the only thing keeping it from looking like new.

Got a couple of Carharrt Detroit jackets in different colors that I like a lot, too. Bought one for work, and liked it so much that I bought another for normal wear.

Carhartt has several that I really like.
I'd like to find something with at least two pockets on the inside, preferably in a "3 season" weight jacket.

I discovered the magic of Gore-tex a few years ago. I have a real rugged jacket from Mountain Equipment Coop (pretty big outfit here in Canada). 95-denier nylon throughout, 3-ply construction, Gore-tex XCR. I used to sweat like a pig in any jacket. I've always been bone-dry with this one! I've been using it 3-season for the past 3 years and it still looks new!
