What's your EDGE level?

I've come up with a scale of Edge-Sharpness that I believe only people of the Knife Knut kind can truly relate to.

On a scale of 1-10 how sharp do you most often keep your blades. (In particular your EDC, whatever it may be)

*1* Butter Knife.

*2* It'll cut tape and rip open packages, letter openner.

*3* Choppy Rough edge, it'll rip through materials with a bit of effort.

*4* Cleaner Rough/Jagged Edge, it'll rip with less force.

*5* It'll tear paper.

*6* It slices roughly through paper.

*7* Refined Edge, It'll make an adequately clean slice through paper effortlessly.

*8* You take your edges seriously, and put time into it, you can push cut paper all day.

*9* Straight Razor.

*10* Your list of hobbies currently includes 'Hair Whittling'

My personal pick, I usually carry at a 7, I find that a refined paper slicing edge will cover all my needs and can be achieved quickly with diamond hone and strop in minutes.

So, what level of edge do you prefer?

8-10, depending on how the knife will be used/cared for, but I sharpen for a lot of people. Paper wheels can get me to a 8 or 9 in a few passes if the edge isn't too beat up.

Depends on the knife. My EDC is a Spyderco Native. I like a workign edge that is a tiny bit toothy, so I guess it's at a level 7 and gets resharpend when it gets to level 5.
My other EDC is a SAK Super Tinker. The large blade gets sharpened to 8 then resharpened at level 5. The small blade on the SAK gets sharpened to 10 and resharpened at 8.

Depends on the alloy.
Alloys with carbides ~ 7
Alloys without carbides ~8

bout a 7 on my edc's i got my manix 2 to 8.5 probably but i don't carry it as often and dont keep it that sharp all the time

I prefer "Hair Whittling"

Most my carry edges are kept at this level. Once at that level, just a few passes per side on the strop after use, and they stay that way.

Between 9 and 10. I like to keep my knives hair whittling sharp, but that edge doesn't last very long in use. So at any given point in time my knife will be at about that level of sharpness.

8-9. One of my biggest pet peves is missing a hair or two after shaving. These are usually discovered on my way to class or midday. I like every knife I own to be able to correct this problem.

I keep mine around 6-8 generally, although I have managed to whittle a hair once. I'm still working on my technique with sharpening. I edc a gerber paraframe, so I get plenty of practice sharpening :).

If my knife can't at least rough cut paper, then I know I have some work ahead of me.

About the best I can do is a 9. I don't always get to that level with all my knives so an 8 would be the best guess at most of my EDC blades. Though some are 9's! :D

A 7-8 for me. I have a few favorite folders that I rotate through for EDC. My recently acquired favorites are:

Spyderco Para 2
ZT 0350

Older folders that are EDC'd:

Buck Vantage Pro
Kershaw Skyline
CRKT Ripple

I enjoy sharpening my knives, so am picky about having a nice edge.

Any thing I make has to be able to shave effortlessly. My edc folders I keep at 8-10 I'm a big fan of cpm 154 and 154 cm
