What's Your Experience with Spyderco's S90V

I like the performance of the S90V Military better than the S110V Manix LW or S110V Native. For some reason it seems to keep a hair shaving edge much longer. This one is well used.

Reprofiling is more difficult than M390, but diamonds will get the job done. I like the micro bevel off SM med.

S90v takes a wicked sharp yet toothy edge. If I go to shave it does that, and a layer or two of skin as well.

I prefer that type of edge. If I harvest a deer, turkey, elk or even clean a trout...

...I'm not going to give them a shave. I'm slicing protein.

My 2 cents. YMMV.

S90V is IMO the top end of the stainless super steels that still holds a pretty balanced set of properties while being highly wear resistant. S110V's and beyond, you start losing some of that balance for the sake of wear resistance.

Could be wrong, not a metalurgist, but I think S90V keeps a lot if it's properties even as low as 60RC

I have been using the new S90V Military and I am pleased with its performance. I cut a bunch of veggies yesterday and the toothyness of the edge really does change the feel when pushing through the skin of the veggie.

I bumped a the edge on a ceramic bowl and did get a small flat spot about 3/4" from the point. The flat may have been a single mm of edge. It was barely visible. Basically a reflective point on the edge. The flat was still completely workable and would cut normal stuff but cutting a piece of paper you could feel the flat catch. So out of curiosity I performed a small freehand sharpening cycle on the fine spyderco pocket stone. The undamaged edge just slipped smoothly across the stone. I could feel the flattened segment of the edge drag on the stone. After just a few passes on each side the flat no longer dragged and didnt reflect light. I tested on my arm hair. Razor sharp. Tested on paper and there was no catching or dragging on any segment of the blade. Refined a bit on the stroppe and its just as sharp as it was after the first time I polished on the stroppe the day I got it. It didnt seem difficult to fix the little ding. I am huge with edge maintenance. I obsesively touch up (freehand on the pocket stones and then stroppe) my edges. I firmly believe that it prevents me any major issues. Its also just very therapudic. I am pleased with the performance of S90V so far. It took only slightly longer to fix than my 204p blade.

No, I agree, this has been my experience as well. It's in a sweet spot, at least the way Spyderco does the HT.

No doubt. Never have any reservations about picking up Spyderco's S90V blades. No matter what latest & greatest steel comes out, I'll continue to enjoy S90V for a long, long time.

I've just given light use to my CF S90V Manix 2 XL for a couple of years and it stays pretty well razor sharp just touching up with the Sharpmaker medium rods -- still has the factory edge except for very edge. Lately, I've done the same with the S90V Forum Native, with the same results. They both still have that "bitey" edge, to coin a word.
