I am looking for opinions on good 5"-5.5" all around use fixed blade. Tell me your favorite and why.

I happen to like this size knife. I own 3 that to fit your criteria, which I use. All mine are used for general outdoor duties, camping, hiking, ect.

My favorites are:

Fallkniven S1. It's a very strong knife, at a very reasonable price. Good cutting ability, with a great steel, VG10. Not too heavy, but will stand up to anything you throw at it. I trust it enough to have given it to my wife. It stays attached to her pack.

Chris Reeve One Piece. Mine happens to be his Mountaineer II. This is an extremely strong knife, with an incredible edge. It's one of my best cutter's. A little on the heavy side. However, it's doubtful you will ever break one. No matter what you do to it.

Bob Dozier Pro Guides Knife. This actually has a 4.75" blade of D2 steel. However, it feels like an extension of my hand. An unbelievable feel and balance to it. Great cutting ability. Due to its size, weight, balance, ect, it probably gets the most use.

The last two are a little pricy, but worth every dollar. If you want to keep extra change in your pocket, there are several less expensive knives that will last you a lifetime. Fallkniven is one of them. Also check out Swamp Rat, Becker, and Bark River. Just got a Bark River North Star. A little smaller than what your looking for (4" blade) but quite a nice knife. May be the best cutting knife I now own and it goes up against some stiff competition. There is a great review of this knife on Knifeforums, in the Bark River section.

Good choice. My favorites are a CS Master Hunter, a couple of Marble's Campcrafts in 52100 (one micarta, one leather), a F1 and a Roselli erapukko (large hunter). I also have a Bark River Woodland with a 3" blade that is an outstanding cutter with great ergonomics, though a little smaller than your specs.

I really like the Spydie Fred Perrin Street Bowie. It is very light, has a great eregonomic grip, has a 5" flat-ground VG10 blade that's an awewsome slicer! I used to have a Fallkniven S1 but unlike JohnnyO I have come to prefer less overbuilt knives in this size, b/c I use a 5" blade for cutting more than prying or chopping that would require extra sturdiness and bulk. For those tasks I use a big knife or axe. So I wouldn't use the Perrin for "survival" tasks other than cutting, where it excels, especially in the kitchen or for self-defense.

That said, if you have the $$ I'm sure a Dozier would out-perform the Spydie six ways from sunday.

I second the Spyderco Perrin. It really is a great knife. It's light, a good cutter, has a great handle, and should be strong enough for reasonable tasks too.

Chris Reeve also. Mine is the Sable IV.Good utility shape. I dont hunt, so the point isnt an issue here.

Easily my favorite in this category is my Bob Dozier Texas Six. (My name, not his.) It's based on his classic #6 design with the blade extended to 5-1/2" and dual guards added. In fact, it looks a whole lot like his Freedom Fighter model that came later on.

This is my ideal general-purpose outdoors knife. It's big enough for anything except heavy chopping, but light to carry and precise enough for very fine work. The grip is excellent and the guards add an additional measure of safety. This knife can build shelters, dress game, cook, make fires, whittle, and whatever else you need to do that involves cutting.

I think this knife has the best edge of anything I own. And at 3/16" thickness this is not a prybar, but it is more than tough enough for what I consider heavy use.

My vote goes to the Mission K&T MPK in either A2 or Beta-Titanium. I've owned a LOT of knives over the years and these are IT for me in the length you've mentioned (although a tad bigger at 5.75"). I also have a fondness for 3.75" - 4.5" blades as evidenced by this picture of my favorite users:

Never to be forgotten: James Mattis, Walt "Doc" Welch, Rob Simonich

My Bob Lum 5" Stalker. It's perfectly balanced and very fast. The blade profile makes for a good general purpose blade as well as a decent fighter.

fishface5,
I gave my S1 to my wife, which is a good knife for her. Both my Dozier PGK and CRK Mtn II are extremely good cutter's. While both are strongly built knives, they have well ground edges. My Mtn II will outcut my PGK, even though the Mtn II is a larger, thicker knife.

However, I've come to believe my new Bark River Northstart will outcut either my PGK or Mtn II. Might even outcut my Dozier K1.

I third the vote for Fred Perrin Spydie fixed blade. Awesome knife! Like Fishface said a great slicer and defender while retaining excellent ergonomics and light weight. Moreover the Tek Lok Kydex sheath is hard to beat. Like it so much I got three (for my boys as well). Good job Spyderco!

I like both the Spydrco Perrin and the Dozier Pro Guide knife. If you can afford it, go with the Dozier.

Greco MST IV, Spyderco Perrin, Camillus CUDA CQB series comes into mind.
