Hi all,

apologies in advance if this has been done to death.

I haven't had a SAK since I was 10 and got one of those little keychain deals with the blade/file/toothpick/tweezers.

Figured it was about time to get one just to have handy for general backpacking/utility.

What's your favorite SAK and what do you use it for?
Would it replace a standard multi-tool?
(Pics would be greatly appreciated)

Best,
Brass

My favorite SAK is a multi-tool, the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X. As for traditional SAK's I'm partial to the Hiker because it has all the tools I like and its cheap/easy to replace at any local Target store. As for what I use it for... everything. That's what SAK's are for after all :p

my fav and the one i carry in my bag is a ranger, imho its got a lotta stuff without being too big/bulky like some can be, i use mine all the time, opening boxes, tightening up stuff (i got one of the little drivers which fits up into the corkscrew, i use that more than anything, for glasses, adjusting sites, etc ) opening bottles of wine and any rough cutting i dont wanna subject my emerson custom '13 to.

It depends. General all around carry I like either the Delux Tinker or Mechanic. For woods carry I perfer the Farmer or Hiker....vwb

My most carried are the Huntsman and Midnite MiniChamp. I've been EDCing them for years.
I like the Huntsman because it's got all the main tools I need in a SAK: two blades, scissors, saw, bottle opener, can opener, wine opener (for my wife the wine drinker), etc.
I like the Midnite MiniChamp because it picks up the slack from the Huntsman. It has the nail file, 2 small blades, retractable pen, orange peeler, cuticle pusher (not used really), mini scissors, ruler, etc etc.
My original fave was a Wenger Safari (now discontinued). It was like the Huntsman IIRC but had the Phillips screwdriver and locking main blade. I stopped EDCing it when it was discontinued and switched to the Huntsman.
You asked for pics so here's my collection:

The top two on the left side are Huntsmans/Huntsmen? (Yellow scaled Stayglow and red scaled with Ultra Green V10 Glow In The Dark Fob attached). The Midnite MiniChamp is in the middle row, the small translucent red model below the custom grey (HAIII) scaled Farmer with scissors and pocket clip.

Here's another pic with them closed (except the custom Farmer which is open)

My first knife and my only SAK was a Bantam in Hunter Green. Basically this pattern with green scales and no key ring:

It had all the functions I needed in a knife: A blade and a bottle opener. Cutting and drinking :D

Recently ordered a pioneer:

I'm a bit concerned that I won't know what to do with all the functions...I'll see how it compares to the Bantam.

There are a more than few models that I like a lot. It depends on the time and place. I am guaranteed to have my rambler on my keychain -so those tools are back-up. Here is the top 7

Tinker
Deluxe Tinker
Mechanic
Compact
Pioneer
Farmer
Trekker

It should be noted that I switch out the scale from the compact to whatever I decide to carry. As long as it uses the regular size plastic red scales then it will take the compact's scale. That Adds a nice pen to whatever I choose. It is always nice to have a pen. ^ the bantam is a nice one but I have never had it. Now I kind of want one...

Holy Cow!!!
That's a gorgeous collection you got there Mystic.
If I were you it would take me ages to figure out which one of those beauties to take out for the day.

Huntsman, although I gave mine to my sister. I now carry an Outrider which is like a larger Huntsman, trading the smaller blade for a screwdriver.

Thanks man. Actually I only really use the above mentioned Huntsmans and Midnite MiniCamp. A few of the others make it into my EDC rarely but otherwise they're all still in their boxes.
I bought most of these at warehouse sales for less than 1/2 price so just grabbed them up just to get a small collection going really. I didn't buy them with the intention of using them any time soon.
A couple times a year there's a local company that has Warehouse sales featuring mainly household products, personal hygiene, cosmetics, fragrances, etc. They usually have a Victorinox section selling SAKs and Swiss Army watches. I bought a Victorinox Swiss Army Summit XLT Watch (I believe is the model name) for $75 and IIRC it's normally about $400 Cdn retail. All I had to do was change the battery after a year or so.

Oh, I EDC the Blue Swiss Card in my wallet too.

Here's an EDC pic from last year with the watch. It's the one in the middle.

Loving swiss champ. It's a bit chunky sure, but if you have EDC bag then it's pefrect. Farmer and Hiker are excellent models for EDC, but they lack one really handy tool: scissors.

It's tuff to choose a favorite as their are so many great models to pick from. My huntsman gets carried the most tho because it has the tools that I think are important yet is still pockatable.
