There are lots of opinions on what the most useful size knife or knives are. And of course the situation plays a huge part in a knife's usefulness. As does personal preference.

For the longest time I was primarily focused on medium sized knives such as the NO-E, SJT, RW, CT, and now the ASH1. I always felt that a good mid sized blade could handle most any task as a "Jack of all" type of knife. I still do.

But now I am also being drawn to the Big knife Small knife idea. Something like a Battle Mistress and a BAIII, HRLM, or Swamp Warden.

For me I am currently looking at my FFBM and Swamp Warden. I'm not sure what chores would some up that these could not handle.

So what is your favorite line up if you had to gear up. And why? Add pics if you can for us visual people. :)

My HOGFSH is my favorite knife. Ever. I have owned a CGFBM and I own a couple of Ratweilers. The FSH seems to be the most comfortable large blade I have owned. I usually carry a Chop or Ratweiler with me to work. They have now been replaced with the FSH. I rarely need a small blade as a larger blade can do 95% of the cutting tasks I need to do. About the only time I rely upon a small blade is when I am back packing and doing food prep. FWIW, my small blade is a Swamp Warden now. I have used many different small blades over the years. I will probably stick with the Swamp Warden until I bore of it. The FSH will some times be replaced with my new ASH1. Just to keep things interesting.

My pack setup is a a SH-e LE with a SOG Multitool in the front pocket of my combat master sheath.....my Big knife is a 1/300 in drop leg kydex or my Rowe Pin lock, medium/small knife is a D2 Dogskinner with black micarta and a leatherman sheath and my small knife is a Cultellus with tigerhide linen. My floater is the SHSH fatty...I don't know where to catagorize that one...smaller than the fatty 1/300, but weighs as much :p I'd probably grab the 1/300 before IT and the SH-e would be grabbed first for being packed around strapped to the back of my backpack :p.

I hear this often. What would you say the 5% is. Slicing? Food prep? Detailed carving?

pbusby: That is a wicked line-up. You have some sweet toys. I also always have at least one multi-tool with me.

I love the SOG powerlock...my fav...leatherman stays at home now :p. You'll get to play with all my users when we go for the hunt :D whenever that may be.

My favorite kit is this combo:

The ZTSH goes on the left hip and the Krein TGS goes on the shoulder strap of my pack, handle down. For those of you who would know the area, this picture was taken last spring at the top of the Palisades Creek trail, on the WY/ID border.

Food prep and detailed carving.
About the only time my small blade makes an appearance is when I am sitting around cutting up cheese or salami. A small blade comes out for first aid occasionally also. But I am sure I could manage with a larger blade if that was all I had.

Medium to large blade (Dogfather, Camp Tramp, Steel Heart,Ratweiler) with a reliable folder, iwb carry( 3 1/2 - 4" blade):D

This and a GB hatchet.

You know, I LOVE my Hell Razor, and all my Busse beauties. But I have to admit, when called out to go examine archaeological finds, I have lately taken only this:
BME2.jpg

Because, it replaces the hatchet, trowel, and other tools I used to tote. I do keep a folder in my pocket for tiny work, but this BM-E has done everything for me!

Big/small is what I'd take. FBM and BATAC would be my preferred combo. I'd probably take a medium as well.

I'm actually still working on this very thing. To tell you the truth my setups differ for the situation.

If it's a day hike, I have my Shadow IV. It's California park friendly, and big enough for any of the day tasks that might come up.

As far as a camping/hunting knife, I've tried a few. CG FBM (mounted to my daypack), HOFSH, SHSHII, and some that weren't Busse or Busse worthy.;) I have to admit that the larger knives get a little bulky while hiking around. Yes they are great for almost any task but having one slapping you leg or strapped to your leg can get a little awkard and annoying. It has to do with the length and weight, so I'm currently looking to try something different. And that is have a very large chopper mounted to my daypack so I can pull it while wearing my pack and have a med size knife on my hip. My idea for a med size knife has changed somewhat, used to be anything large was a Battle Mistress and med size was a Steel Heart. Now anything over 12 1/2 or 13 inches is a large knife and anything over 15 inches is a chopper. So for me a med size knife now is 10 inches and up to 12 1/2 with 11 or 12 inches being darn near perfect.

I'm still working on what sheath is best. For outdoors, all weather conditions I prefer Nylon or Kydex. Dan at Semper Paratus Tactical makes one of if not the best nylon/kydex insert sheaths out there. Extremely functional, but Nylon sheaths tend to be big and bulky and typically ride low, requiring a leg tie off. While kydex is more compact and has the ability to ride higher, it's difficult to have one setup for storage. Currently the only maker that I've seen come close to making a kydex sheath with any kind of storage is PiterM. I have one for my Shadow IV. As cool as it is (PiterM does an incredible job) the storage is rather small.

So where does that leave me.....still looking. Oh well, I'm looking forward to trying out the LEASH1 (currently squeezed into a Spec Ops) and hopefully soon we'll have a chance to try out the SarSquatch. Which I'm hoping will come down in length some and go up in thickness.

Anyhow....there it is, another freakingass long post!
