What's your favorite war movie, and why?

I dont really know why, but Saving Private Ryan has to be my favorite.I saw it a long time ago,but I remember the whole movie in great detail. This is very rare for me.Apocalypse Now is pretty great too.

I'm with George C. Scott! "Doctor Strangelove or How I learned to Love the Bomb." Why you say. Well war is hell period no discussion end of the line. Glorifying it may entertain but leaves me cold. Stark realism hits to close to home. (I still remember the first time I saw Apocalypse Now... it was aboard ship in the wardroom while underway. Not a word was spoken. Folks just drifted off as it ended.) Sooooo give me satire!!! Yeah big time satire! And nothing has topped the good Doctor Strangelove yet

in no particular order: 1. Sand Pebbles(I was in the Army when i first saw it and got real depressed) 2. Cross of Iron 3. Das Boot 4. full Metal jacket 5. Beach Red 6. all quiet on the Western Front(still great) 7. Thin Red Line (characters in the movie were real and i could identify with them) 8. Saving Private Ryan 9. Merills Marauders( great movie about some real tough soldiers who were pushed way beyond their limits. 10. to hell and back ( people today dont even know who Audie Murphy was) Pork chop Hill9 people today havce forgotten that bloody war)

My favorite is an old one, "Battle Cry," about the Battle of the Bulge.
It was in black and white as I recall.

I'd have to say up to now for me, it's Three Kings. It's one of those rare war movies that humanizes the "enemy" and shows that war sucks for everybody.

I guess I'm the only guy that liked Sniper. That's weird. It had some great knives in it. :-) Buck Applegate Smatchet, Ek Dagger, AMK Shadow. And...two awesome rifles: the M40A1 and the H&K PSG1(or is that PGS1?).

I really liked RED DAWN alot when I saw it as a teenager. Some real good scenes in it, and it was the movie that got me interested in Spec Ops/Guerilla warfare.

Apocalypse Now is a classic. I really like the scenes when the AIR CAV attack the beach while playing Wagner. I also like the scenes with Dennis Hopper.

The Horror,The Horror.

I think a lot of us think Sniper is kinda farfetched. I mean, this guy's partner gets killed. OK. Then they replace him with a sniper from an urban police force who has NO kills for their big, all-important mission? Then the two of them, despite the fact that they clearly dislike each other greatly, go out together. The older guy keeps changing the plan without telling the FNG until he's done it--does this really make sense? Wouldn't the mission be screwed if something happened to him and he hadn't told the FNG about the 15 changes he's made to the plan?

Besides, Tom Berenger keeps using that stupid gangbanger sideways pistol technique. I've had two friends so far tell me they point a pistol that way because "that's the way military snipers shoot, dude" and while I have no proof, I blame this movie!! (And also my idiot friends who think snipers fire their handguns differently from the rest of the service for some reason.)

BTW, I LOVE Braveheart though I wish it could have been done w/o Gibson. Also loved Saving Private Ryan--accurate or not, you stop taking vets for granted.

With the exception of Sniper being a complete rip-off of a lot White Feather did, it was a good movie. Zane's char pissed me off, though.

The air assault scene in Apocalypse Now is my favourite in a movie EVER. I still get goosebumps to this day..

My top 3 (because I can't pick just one, 3 was hard enough) would have to be:

Full Metal Jacket
- Speaks for itself.

Saving Private Ryan
- For all of the above stated reasons.

Stalingrad
- German import from the producers of Das Boot. Highly recommended.

If anyone is into movies or wants to expand on this topic please come over to www.cinematopia.com . This same topic was posted over there awhile ago. Thanks for putting up with the shameless plug.

Top 3:

Saving Private Ryan - well done and much of it seemed to ring true with at least some of those who were there.

Braveheart - Good entertainment. Passionate war fought by passionate men at great cost and after great provocation. The use of treachery and betrayal seems to have been a favorite tactic - well depicted in this movie.

Mad Max - just nuts I guess.

In no particular order:

Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now

They all make me feel that those are places I should stay as far away from as possible. And the acting in all is very good IMO.

"Killer Angels" (Gettysburg) I think I got the name right.
"Memphis Belle"
"Topgun" (Not that good a movie except for the main character, (the F-14 Tomcat)F-14s drive me crazy!)
"Victory at Sea"
"The Horse Soldiers"
"The Longest Day" (Read the book!)
"The Battle of Britian"

Great topic...I hope it stays:

1. Saving Pvt Ryan (Uncle Bill tell us why you like it...I'm interested in hearing your view). D-day was an awful battle and we lost a lot of good men there. Read the book by Stephen Ambrose (D-Day). It makes me appreciate my Uncle and father-in-law all the more.
2. In Harm's Way. John Wayne finally does a war movie right.
3. Das Boot. Wow! If you didn't have clautophobia before the movie you will when it is done. See the director's cut. In German is even better!
4. The Generals. Not very well known but exceptionally dones. A foriegn film.
5. Schindler's List. Takes place during the war so I feel it meet the criteria.
6. The Bridge Over The River Kwai. Sir Alec Guiness (?sp) before he started weilding a light saber.

I also think the Viet Nam scenes in Forrest Gump were well done compared to other movies. Makes me think of the Nam vets with appreciation.

There are more out there.

Must Misses include A Thin Red Line.

Cross of Iron & Apocolypse! 633 Squadron gets a mention too...
Last night clint eastwood's Heartbreak ridge was on...what knife was on his webgear in the (final) coming home sequence???!!!

Gotta say, APOCALYPSE NOW - that movie was INTENSE and just might be my favorite movie of all time.

Happy Trails...

ROMANS: 10:13

Also in no particular order:

The Guns of Navarrone
Doctor Strangelove
A Midnight Clear
Pvt. Ryan
Braveheart
Das Boot
Zulu
Bridge over the River Kwai

Gettysburgh: "The "Killer Angels" was much better than the movie, and is by far the best book I've read about war and warriors.

Also, "Patton" got to me: the first scene in the movie was the aftermath of the battle at Kasserine Pass, where my father was wounded (he lost a leg) and taken by the Germans.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned already, but I'd like to toss in a couple of others:
Tora!Tora!Tora!
War of the Worlds (OK, it's a fictional war, sue me!

)
Wolf
