Hi,
What is your main interest in knives?
Is it collecting, making, sharpening, researching, history of the blade, etc.....

I'm really getting into the sharpening part. Reading up on what I can find on sharpening. Searching for new and better ways. Reading how differant metals hold a edge better then other, sharpen differant then others, etc.....

What do you find to be the most interesting part of knives?

I tend to focus on getting knives that will work well for specific task that I do. And of course I usually get the best that I can for these areas.

I also like to look at the different styles and designs every now and then

I like to try different makers, designs, steels, finding out which ones work best for me. Of course, there are so many different types of "best" depending on what I'm trying to do, and so many varieties of knife that I'm not worried about ever finding one do-all knife and having to stop buying new ones. :)

My main interest in knives isn't about the knives any more, it's about the people, the makers, my fellow collectors the dealers the manufacturers the people here at BFC. I just spent 12 hours at a knife show where I knew I wasn't buying anything, why? Because Knife People are the best people. Talking to the makers about there work, touring a show with a maker the caliber of Tim Herman and getting the chance to look at knives through his eyes. Getting the chance to see one of my friends buying a new knife for his collection is a great way to spend a weekend.

I came for the knives and I stayed for the people.

I'm in search for the uliimate slicing knife..in a hunter pattern...I want a thin blade , that holds an edge for a reasonable amount of cuts, then is easy to sharpen..Of course I get sidetracked rather easily..8-)
My GUN safe has more duty with KNIVES now...

My main interest is with tactical folders and sharpening. I think we all have a sharpening obsession deep within us!

All of the above. It is knives in general that I am interested in. I like to use and am starting to get interested in collecting. I think I will start collecting with a couple of slipjoint patterns and then go from there.

I like reading about and learning about knives as a whole. Sharpening is one of the things that I am learning to do a lot better. This forum has been a great help in improving my sharpening skills as has the help of a local knife maker by the name of Lee Brooks. He recently gave me a few tips on how to sharpen.

Hi,

Good question...I am on the hunt for "the one" perfect knife FOR ME... ok, actually the ONE folder and the ONE fixed blade ;)...my main criteria is that it has to be the ultimate tactical tool given my skills and abilities...the Crawford Wortac is a very strong contender and I have one on order...still not sure about the fixed blade :(

I am seriously considering taking up martial arts again and/or lessons in knife-fighting...I just purchased Michael Janich's Fighting Folders video...the more I watch it, the more interested I become in pure tacticals.

my main interest in knives is this undescribable feeling I get when I part something. I love cooking and slicing veggies and meat, I also get into skinning when I do it.

then there is wood carving which is a variation of the above.

also I am into martial arts and the developement of the skill to defend myself with a movement of a knife to a precise target on an attacker

of course I love sharpening, history, design and just carressing the edge which I probably do hundreds of times per day

I know I probably come off like a psycho but I am really a good guy.
:D :D

Im into fixed blades with unusual design more than folders. And knives that have a tactital application. Im a big fan of F.PERRIN, LACY SZABO and Bladerigger designs. Also i collect CRKT .Wish i could afford some RYAN & STRIDER stuff as well, OH! almost forgot SOG also.

Hey David,

Perhaps you'll like Bud Nealy's new JKD (as in Jeet Kune Do) designed by a martial artist Joe Maffei...

Good topic...interesting answers. My main interest over the last year has been in getting other people interested in knives or helping them see how useful knives are and to use knives themselves. I have given knives to a few of my coworkers and it is great to see them use the knives and grow attached to their knives as useful allies. I have brought some of my "prettier" blades into work and let some of the ladies in the office check them out. I haven't gotten any of the women at work to want a knife yet, but they aren't afraid of picking them up and looking at them anymore.

I'm into using knives!!!! :D

I do a lot of wood carving and outdoors stuff, as well as frequently using a knife at work.

i started out interested in traditional slipjoints. Have shifted to include tacticals and fixed blades. After just buying my first custom, I am eager to learn and acquire more. To fund this, i have a coin collection that will soon be for sale. Hasn't seen the light of day in years. Can't touch em without ruining their value, what is the fun in that?

RL,thats awesome wish i could post some pics of my stuff for ya but cant.Thats definiely the kind of design that appeals to me.

One of the main things I love about collecting knives is that they will last forever (given a reasonable amount of care). Someone (my Son I hope) will be able to use and enjoy the "tools" I have obtained 50 years from now. Not only are they tools but they can be works of art as well. Knives....you gotta love um :D

I like sharpening them. I just can't get enough. Recently my parents nags me about how I keep sharpening certain knives. Of course, they ain't the knife people kind.
I like good lookers that work, and I used to insist on folders (because they're the next best thing that I could actually carry in public, screw this Canadian law crap.), but now I don't mind some nice fixed blades too.
If I find a knife that doesn't have an edge, I'll put one on it. Working in a restaurant for like 9 months taught me that the only knife that will cut you seriously is a half dull one.
I guess you could say that I like collecting them, but I just don't have enough money for it. I got enough hobbies that cost me too much money. (Computers, fountain pens, knives)

My main interest in knives would have to be the edge. Knives all have to cut something. This leads directly to using and sharpening.

But maybe I like handles more, and there are a lot of different blade shapes and grinds…

Of course, metallurgical alchemy is fascinating, as is the history of knives in different cultures and religions.

There are enough different blade steels and ways of making blades to keep one busy for a lifetime.

I find use and combination of materials interesting: wood, stone, shell, horn, bone, natural or synthetic, ancient, and modern

Craftsmanship, workmanship, design, line, form, Art!

I guess I like just about everything about them :)

Exactly what Phil said, the people. Without the type of people that predomiate the area of knives, I would not mess with them much.
