What's your opinon, worst steel ever?

with the exception of buck the 420 stuff & aus4 & aus6 are pretty poor performers. as to 420 one member stated--" i have to sharpen 420 in the dark, because it loses its edge in the sunlight" i thought that was one of the funniest posts i've heard in 13 months i've been on the forum . dennis

+1 on gerber mystery steel

and some CRKT stuff sucks alot, including their 7Cr14

and the BM Pika II 9Cr13 gave me tons of problems, which is funny because I love 8Cr13MoV, but the 7 and 9 have given me problems

and 420j2 sucks, but Bucks 420HC works really good

and as for BM's 154CM.. its my favorite steel of all..don't know why you guys have problems with it

not a big fan of AUS8 but so many knives are made with it, that its hard to hate all of them, so I wouldn't say i hate it

The 154cm on my Leatherman charge is half ground away by my futile attempts to put a razors edge on it. My Benchmades are more or less safe queens so it maybe the heat treat. If the rest of the so called super steels are like this, average joe's like myself are probably better off with the simple stainless steels like Victrinox etc,to use.

AUS-8 because it doesn't stop burring.

ZDP-189, despite its popularity. I've had it on a couple knives, and both of them held the most horrible edges.

Remember, Case's Tru-Sharp is touted as "surgical stainless", but I get what you're saying.

I have to agree with you; now that I think about it, any stainless could be "Surgical Stainless". I've been here a few years, and this is the first time I've felt the need for the :foot: Smiley. As for others like 440A, IIRC, Bernard Levine once stated that he has a set of custom kitchen knives in 440A, and they're very good. I also have a Kershaw Black Horse #1060 from the early 90's with AUS6, and it performs very well - right up there with my old U.S. Schrades.

This is a bad idea for a thread under perfect conditions , all it will lead to is more arguing . . .

But that's what makes this place so much fun! ;)

Thank you dennis. You've make my day:).

I would say the worst would be the mystery steel in all those cheap keychain/gas station knives or Gerber's surgical stainless. Not that I own any... anymore at least.

Anonymous China steel is the worst. It's anyone's guess what you're getting.

Titanium also holds a poor edge, which I find amusing for some reason.

+1 for anonymous china steel.

Also found out I'm not too keen on 154cm. Actually prefer my Aus8a over it.

For me "anonymous China steel" is really, really hit or miss. There's two of the exact same model of knife me and a friend got a few years back-his held an edge, although not excellent, for a goodly amount of time, while mine chipped (CHIPPED, yes) on cutting card board.

I was initially underwhelmed with CPM S30V, which didn't hold a razor edge long enough for my liking, but grew to appreciate it during a home refurb. I would still pick VG10 or ZDP over it though.

As some of you already mentioned, CRKT's AUS-4 sucks bigtime IMO.
Lost its edge rapidly, can't get it really sharp again.

Oh yeah, don't forget Aus 4 from CRKT. Got a little version of the M16 and I swear my butter knife keeps an edge longer :)

Another vote for anonymous China steel, though anonymous Pakistan steel gives it a run for its money.

Of the named steels I've used, my vote goes for AUS4.

Anything massed produced with "Pakistan" on the blade. Now I know where all the recycled soup cans go.
