what's your reason for a knife addiction?

As a kid, I'd always liked blades but wasn't allowed to have one until I was older (in Scouts).

During the teen years, I purchased a few cheapies for the coolness value. Some Jaguar balisongs, an illegal double-sided boot knife or 2, a huge thrust dagger. All of which are crappy cutters (uncomfortable to hold when using, and what I'd consider "soft" edges).

As an adult, I started carrying a knife for SD purposes when I lived in a not-so-good part of town in a big city, many years ago (mostly a balisong, but I also sometimes carried a Gerber EZ Open). During some of this time, I worked in Shipping/Receiving and Inventory so I was also forever cutting open boxes. After I moved out of that city, I just never stopped carrying.

Then I found this site. :D The quality of the knives I carry is substantially increased thanks to the knowledge I've acquired here. I still haven't ventured into the realm of customs (mostly because of cost)...someday ;)

Trust. I grew up in the hills of eastern Kentucky where a common admonition was 'never trust a man who doesn't either carry a knife or wear a hat.' As silly as that may sound, I believe that an attraction to knives is almost innate in men. My first stitches came from closing a folder on my hand when I had no business even touching that forbidden fruit. But I was drawn to knives at very early age and have been fascinated by them ever since. It probably goes back to the 'hunter/gatherer' genetic print that drives many of our impulses to this day.

Started when I was 4 and I've got the scar to proove it. Dad was a butcher and started helping him when I could see over the table. He taught me how to sharpen free hand on a stone and then keeping the knives we used in the business sharp was my job. That and going hunting was how we spent time together. So for me, knives are something that makes me feel close to my Dad.

It's because the lady that fed us when we where little kids used them and they bring back fond memories. Thanks mom!
Double thanks! My mother bought me my first decent knife, my first rifle, and my first bottle of hard liquor. :D (and we're "city folk"! ;) )

I do not like knives. I buy them to destroy them. Who needs knives? Not me, said the walrus. One is plenty. The one I carry is from China. Yesterday's was from Taiwan but it broke on a butter pat. So what? It was ONLY A STINKIN KNIFE!

BAH ON KNIVES!

:grumpy:
