What's your reason for being outdoors?

Liam, my degree was in Parks and Recreation with a goal of being a ranger. I sold out to make money instead and was able to enjoy the outdoors as a recreationist rather than employee. I pretty much have no regrets about that because I could not have lived the life of a USFS or NPS ranger. Can't take orders and all that. Keep in mind that a job working in the outdoors to escape the "rat race" can become a rat race of a different kind.

I admire tremendously those who chose to work for a governmental service in the outdoors (my granddad and his dad were both Michigan conservation officers) but it can be a tough life life with little financial reward. Better to retire rich and then become a volunteer. :D

i love seeing nature as nature intended. I love the close encounters with the furry and feathered kind, love tramping and camping, taking photos and sucking in that clean air. I used to hunt when I was a young-un but the laws tightened up somewhat and I moved home to the big smoke. None of my mates hunt anymore and most of us live in the city.

Great thread.

chupacabra, I saw him on tv. Be careful!
I brought up bigfoot in here a couple years back, I actually believe he could exist.
I was alone on that one.:(

well , you are no longer :) ... but I seen a big cat that only exists in rumor and legend here too ...

Ever since I was a small boy, I was fascinated by the lives and exploits of the pioneers of the US, the fur trade and mountain man eras.

Maybe I'm just a wannabe loser, but I like to go outdoors and pretend I'm one of those guys. I like to go out and set up a camp and go "pioneering" from there. Takes me back to a time when things were simpler, often harder. Back to a time that I can otherwise only read about. WHile out pioneering, I do my share of fishing and hunting, but I think it really comes down to enjoying the natural world and marveling at its beauty, and pondering the thought of the One who made it, and what my place is in it.

For me, I have two general activities: hiking and fishing.
The same here.

When I was younger (in my teens and twenties) I really enjoyed camping out for several days at a time....especially camping on the beach.
I also used to love rock climbing.

But these days I do more day hikes and one day fishing trips.

I have always had a connection with nature, the forest is a place that is familiar to me where I can feel both safe and at home. I feel alive and fulfilled when out in the forest, and no two days are ever the same.

Hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, roving, browsing, gathering, practicing skills and plinking. Plus the benefits of spiritual, physical, emotional and mental health. Understanding of how it works and the knowledge I need to sustain myself while there.

To get away from people. Not that I don`t like people, but we`re a noisy , messy bunch. Listening to the sounds of nature for a couple of days is the most refreshing experience for me.
