What's your sharpening goal?

My sharpening goals are to create a edge that cuts with minimal effort while maintaining maximum control in the cut. My goals are to achieve the best possible edge geometry for the knife and to apply a finish suited for the tasks of the blade.

My goals for advancement are to always be more efficient during sharpening and to discover ever better geometries and stones to provide the best cutting edges possible.

Shave arm hair and cleanly slice receipt paper. I don't need more than that, sharpening is a necessity for me and not a hobby.
Not that there is anything wrong with that, but a so-called "working edge" suits my needs well enough.

I usually go for the edge to match the intended use and the steel. I will let high vanadium steel, or steels with larger, chunkier carbides be a little toothier. I will take fiber grained steels to a more polished or mirrored edge. Unless I'm just playing around, then I will go full mirror shine. I love M390 at about a 600 grit. But then .5 micron diamond paste on strops is fun too. :)

For me, sharpening is a hobby. A way to telex and enjoy my knife. It probably sounds silly, but I enjoy the process.

But then I don't mind cleaning my guns after I shoot either. :)

Hanging atom test. No where near that level yet but if I ever get there I let you know if I am still alive.

Till then Jason B pretty much summed it up, but to slowly reach that point that he is talking about.
