I'm bringing my Fiskars, my Mora and my Wave. All work very well, and they're comfortable for me. Both the chopper and mora are quite easy to sharpen, too. I've got most any base covered with these options, as I don't live in an area where it's very valuable to carry a machete.

A machete would be so much better for harvesting to fill that pipe of yours

More to the point....

I've been vacillating on the perfect set of hiking tools. Before getting into knives, I would have happily wandered off with an SAK of some sort. My best set so far is a small multi-tool, a medium fixed blade (4"-ish), and a folding saw. Another set would look like an SAK and a golok.

I think it goes with the distance, terrain, duration of trip, wildlife, etc. For a day hike, I have chosen an SAK Trekker, backed with a couple single-edged razor blades. For multi-day hikes, I would go with trio above. If I were going to more remote areas, I might want to beef things up a bit with the golok. Go third world or tropical jungle and my kit might change a lot.

You know, it just occured to me that no one has mentioned a satellite phone here-- a perfectly good way to get yourself out of hot water!

[ring, ring] Ranger Smith? Could you please send a helicopter and a cute nurse to these coordinates? ...."

Always a Wave and a 3" Brusletto. Chopper depends on what I am doing. Right now typically a machete. Before was a shorty Gerber Hatchet.

trios? i have a few favorite duos...

course it would probably be my 889, ganga ram, and very old $10 multitool, the beaters i just realized get no love from my camera thus i have no images on hand. sak's are still my main knives.

1) Mora #780 or Buck 105 Pathfinder
2)Leatherman Wave
3)Estwing hatchet

all three of these tools are proving and reliable.

My trio is:
Leatherman Fuse (I miss my PST)
Fallkniven F1 (Swedish Airforce can not be wrong :))
Fiskars "gravity" saw or very small axe (not the best)

If I were to upgrade it would be the following:
Leatherman Wave (the old version)
Fallkniven S1
Sandvik folding saw.

I have a lighter Trio for day trips, but if I were going out for several days this would be mine.

Estwing Hatchet
Bark River Sperati Point
Remingon R4 Camp Knife.

These 3 ir 4 would work me. This is what is on the sheath.

This other configeration would work to but I would rather always use a fixed blade knife then a pocket knife even if Nessmuk thought so much of the two bladed pocket knife I think this CRKT Carson 4 is stronger than a pocket knife.

I like the thought of a small and med knife with a chopper of some type.

Take care,
Bryan

Fehrman FJ, Large blade from Kelsey creek, that me and David thought of.
Folder, no doubt my ZT 302
Smaller fixed blade, Bill Buxton edc, forged 52100.
