whats your trio??

If I wasn't bringing a large chopper then this is usually it. Ranger 5.5", Manix and a Wave. This is part of my urban travel kit.

I don't carry a multi tool much in the woods as I don't have a need for screwdrivers and pliers. I do carry a little Micra all the time as the scissors seem to be a handy item to have.

In the woods I would sub out the multi tool for my Ft. Turner Camp Hawk or 12" machete.

hatchetjack,

Who made that knife above your manix? I looked at Ranger knives website, but can't seem to find that model.

Yes, it's a custom. I'm sure you can get one if you contact Justin over at Ranger. If you are interested, just send the pic to him.

Most of the ones here put mine to shame brandwise and $$ wise

This is what I use regularly , apologies for not having prettied them up for presentation , but they ARE workin animals , not pretties for the top drawer .

Diamond brand hatchet I got at a garage sale , its got an unusualy hard edge and takes a lot to blunt it .

THe big knife I made for myself to suit me and what I do . Slices and slashes like nothing else I have used , its useable for skinning , awesome for parting up a critter , the remnants of the saw on the back make short work of suprisingly big jobs .

The folder is a humble opinel #10 .

That's a really cool trio, Myal. I love something with some character, which my new main squeezes currently lack. I like your home-made blade too.

How do you like your opinel?

For most work , the opinel is good .

I do some nasty things to my knives at times , and I found that the point and edge folds over on the opinel pretty easy .

I guess this is partly because I learned with Okapis , they have sturdier blades .

Opinels were not made with opening shellfish in mind , nor prying them from rocks , or having their points used to drill into coconut shell or other rough treatment as this

they excell as a knife for dressing critters , and kitchen work , and every day tasks as this .

trios? i have a few favorite duos...

Oh.. That Battle Mistress is a beauty! Why don't you show her more love?!?!?

My trio would be my Busse Heavy Heart FSH (Chopper), my Benchmade 9050 (Auto, folder), and my Gerber Multi-tool (everything else).

These have all LONG since proven themselves in the mountains of the Pacific NW. I have to say though... I am liking the looks of the SAK One Handed Fireman. That knife could end up replacing my Gerber.

If I were to walk out at this very moment, I would take whats right in front of me. Otherwise, my choice would be different.

WWII Camillus bone handled folding utility knife w/carbon blade.
Frost 760 w/12c27 stainless-kydex sheath
Becker C/U-7 w/carbon blade and mini PSK sheath kit.

My preference would be;

Victorinox Bundeswehr OH Trekker.
Eriksson Mora 2000 w/12c27mod stainless and kydex sheath.
S.A. Wetterling large hunters axe

I bring a Sven saw, Swamp Rat Ratweiler, Swiss tool, GB wild life hatchet and this year a Scrap yard SS4 to boot.

Dead fall clearing on portage trails is done with the Ratweiler and Sven saw, same combo is used in fire wood gathering around camp, splitting and hammering on things goes to the hatchet, multi tool is used for fishing and field maintenance on gear, and the SS4 will be the everything else user.

I also bring a fillet knife and a micro leatherman for fishing purposes.

hatchetjack, I like that RD a lot. I may have to talk to Justin about making me one like that :)

Myal, I really like that idea of making a blade from a saw blade, I may have a new project to work on.

For an urban situation, my trio would be;
-Buck/Tarani strider folder
-leatherman crunch
-SAK farmer

In the woods it would be harder to choose:
RAT5
VIC outrider/OHT/fireman(only own outrider at moment)
tramontina machete/Ka-bar kukri

I would probably want a mora in there as well as a few other blades, I can never narrow it down to too many.

...

You said that you made a knife of of a saw blade. Now, I have heard of this before, and tried to make one out of a hacksaw blade. However, I could not find anything wide enough, nor sturdy enough. What type of saw blade did you use?

i got a dog father, howling rat LM, and swiss army knife, i think its the secnond or third largest one they make

Groovymr1337

I used a Starret all hard high speed steel power hacksaw blade.

In its early life it was a steel cutting saw blade the better part of a meter long , new they cost about $70 , broken , you can get them free .

The blade is only about 1/8 th inch thick , but its amazingly tough , I spent a couple hours with it free hand using a 4 inch angle grinder and a sander with a 40 grit disk, and used sikoflex eurothane to glued on some slabs of iornbark

the reason I didnt rivit the handle is very simple , its almost impossible to drill through high speed steel , I couldnt drill a dent into it with the cheapo drills I have , so I went for the best glue I know , its used for gluing windscreens into cars .

The smaller power hacksaw blades are good for smaller knives , it takes an awful lot to break them despite the way they look , and the saw on the back is still a very useful tool . I have made a few 4 inch blades with about 3/4 inch of saw teeth on the back of the blade , they work well still , suprisingly well .

a note tho , make sure youre getting an all hard blade , not a bi metal blade .

Who makes your double bit axes?

Thanks,
Patrick

These 3 ir 4 would work me. This is what is on the sheath.

This other configeration would work to but I would rather always use a fixed blade knife then a pocket knife even if Nessmuk thought so much of the two bladed pocket knife I think this CRKT Carson 4 is stronger than a pocket knife.

I like the thought of a small and med knife with a chopper of some type.

Take care,
Bryan
