What's your ultimate (non-Mora) Scandi?

Thank you :D
You're going to be hooked.
Lots of fun to do and very rewarding to carry.
Especially since you are starting with a proven blade.

While the X-Long drill bit is nice, it often isn't necessary.
You can drill from both sides to the middle or you can section your pieces so that the standard drill bit can make it thru from one side.
Be creative ;)

Good luck, we want to see pictures :D

I'm really tossed up between the Skookum and the Koster Bushcrafter. Does anyone have experience with both that can compare them against each other?

I like my Helle for it's unsurpassed slicing ability and comfort, but I don't consider it a heavy duty knife. I can bend/move the blade slightly with my hands where it meets the handle. I don't know if I have a dud, or if the stick tang is tempered soft on purpose.

Sorry it took me so long to report back...

There is no blade play with my Helle.

I have owned the Koster and STILL own a Skookum, the Koster was very well made, and sharp as hell, but the handle left much to be desired for me personally, it was to small and thin. The Skookum is just about perfect in handle and blade shape, and the blade is perfect thickness on the A2, I did own a 3V model as well, and the blade was much thicker, I would have kept that model as well, but it had heat treat issues...Rod took care of the issue in grand fashion and record time. Great maker to deal with...the knife is worth a wait time twice as long IMO. Gene

gunknifenut: Thank you for the response. If you did it over again, would you get it in A2 or in 3V. From pictures it doesn't look like the Skookum even has a slight swell for a guard, so it should be easy to choke up on. Did you get yours with the buttcap or without and why? Thanks again!

I have both.

I like the Skookum slightly better, but with my Koster I had Dan glue 3/8" scales on and then I shaped it myself, so the handles on both are fine.

Koster is slightly smaller. I like that. But it's slightly thicker in the blade which I don't like.

I'd give the skookum the edge in ergonomics but I'd give the koster the edge in staying sharp a long time (but being MUCH harder to sharpen than the 01 Skookum)

Hollowdweller: thanks for the info.

I'm still tossed up between the Koster and the Skookum. Is the Skookum really worth $200 (or $220 in 3V)?
