Hi Friends,

I'll by in S CA with my family visiting my wife's family for Christmas. Any bladesmithing stuff happening around those parts at that time? (Ten days with the in-laws might be more fun than I can stand.)

All the best, Phil

There was a meeting of so cal blades last week, another meeting coming up. Where are you going to be, I am in thousand oaks and would like to meet. I have another knife maker friend in ventura as well.

pm me when you get closer to time. We are in Northern CA but have to take a family trip down to san diego and hesperia at some holiday like point in time.

Hmm, it'd be great to meet all of you. I'll be in Tarzana. I believe Thousand Oaks and Ventura are right close by. San Diego and Bakersfiled might be more of a stretch, but you never know. Thanks for the invites guys. I might take you up on it. Patrick please let me know if anything is cooking with the S Ca Blades then. I'll be there Dec 20 - 30. Mahalo, Phil

I'm the webmaster for the SCBlades, there's nothing happening those dates.

I think even CalKnives has no meeting scheduled for December, though you should check with them.

Tarzana would be a bit of a haul, probably in the neighborhood of 150 miles to my place.

Thousand oaks is not too far, Tazana is in the Valley and I am just down the road. You are welcome to stop by or we can meet for lunch and look at some knives. I would like to see how your folder is doing.

I also have a friend in Ventura (another 20 mins) who is a full time maker and if you wish we can arrange to meet with him. Send me an email and let me know what you might want to do my schedule is flexible.

Thank Patrick, I'd love that! I hope to get my first slip joint done over the long thanksgiving weekend. Depends on daddy duty stuff though.

lets keep in touch and get together, Ill see what else I can come up with while you are here. Any other so cal want to meet??

By the way Phil, just like Iowa the weather here in So Cal is a little different than HI. Today they are expecting cold chill to bring the temperature down to about 78, Ill have some coats for us to wear in the shop.

Hi Guys,

We made it, barely. It seems NW Airlines had a great deal of trouble with many of their mainland flights and snow, thus our was canceled. We had to buy tickets with American to get here. Hopefully NW will come through with our refunds .

Will be here until the 30th. Brought my metal and parts for the coke slipfoint folder, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=587534, I started a while back. Hopefully Patrick and I will be able to get together and I can learn a bunch of stuff from him!!!

All the best for the Holy Days, Phil

Thanks Eric,

My wife and I are trying figure out if we can afford to rent a car for a week. If we do and I can get away after Christmas, and you're up for it, maybe I could blow down to San Diego and check out you little press, etc??? That's a lot of ifs, but who knows....

Hello Phil,

From the day after Christmas through Sunday Dec 28th, I'll be on a little road trip visiting UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara to check out these schools with my youngest son. He will be going to one of these in spring 2009. If Monday Dec 29 or 30 works into your schedule, let me know. I'd be glad to have you come by and squish some hot metal with the press.

Take care,

Eric

Hi Friends,

Well, Epiphany is almost upon us and the twelve days of Christmas are just about over. The best Christmas gifts I got were visiting and working with Patrick Randall in Thousand Oaks and Eric Fleming in San Diego. I had a great time and learned a bunch!

Between the two of those guys holding-my-hand (figuratively speaking!) with my first folder project (Patrick) and forging out and flat grinding a blade (Eric) I believe I have actually learned some of the fundamentals of grinding. (I've been eating just about everything I put to a grinder before working with these great guys.)

Thanks fellas!!!

It was fun to have you in the shop, I was really surprized how well the folder fitted. We ended with a good spring, blade with a flush fit in all three positions and very well centered. I cant wait until you get some handles.

Hello Phil,

It was a pleasure to meet you in person and work with you in the shop. You did a great job forging and grinding your blade. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

That coke bottle folder you worked on with Patrick was really sweet too. Keep us up to date as you go through next steps.

Stop by any time you are out in this neck of the woods...

Take care,

Eric
