I am a newly ordained member of the Brotherhood of People Who Like Shiny Twirly Sharp Things, and, as such, want to know what the freakin' heck is wrong with the rest of you guys. The way I see it, the Balisong is everything a knife should be: fast, dependable, sharp, strong, and FUN.

Why aren't more of you Bali fans?

Well Rags, I really like them but when I show others how they work they get real nervous, I guess they think Murphy's law will prevail and they would lose a finger or two.

But as you said, they are fun and fast and solid, what's not to like? Except locating a quality one that is, they are hard to find, waiting patiently for the BM42 to enter the market.

Might even get two, so I can use both hands spinning and flipping like crazy! But I'll probably only get one, want to see just how light the handles are.

Keep swingin'

Why do you feel we all have to like the same thing?
You like them? Great!
I've got a long list of knives I want, a Balisong isn't one of them. I really don't know what's freakin' wrong with me? I wish I did.

Personally, I enjoy them quite a bit -- or I would, if it weren't legally inadvisable to possess them where I live. *sigh* It's awful hard to get all excited about something that's going to land you in the pokey.

They're illegal here too

Plus the ones that I, ahem, owned, have been horrible POS. Figured they were all that way.

Serves no practical purpose for my knife needs. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I find them down right ugly!

I agree with Mark. They ARE ugly. Anyway, I never saw the point. Give me a SpyderHole anyday.

Ugly?

The "click for larger image" does not work here on the forum. For a larger image, you'll have to find this one on my website and click there.

The handles are wonderfully patterned snakewood fitted into the mirror-polished stainless steel handles by Vance Collver. The very energetic looking tanto is by Mr. Elishewitz, of course.

Personally, I find most knives ugly. My beloved AFCK certainly falls in the ugly bin. The balisong design opens new design opportunities that can lead to some very attractive knives.

Balisongs -- because it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I find them ugly and they're not practical for my purposes. I don't carry knives to be playful and fancy. My knives are tools. I realize that balisongs can also be used in a practical manner, but I don't need the extra "flash" factor.

I like balisongs, but they are illegal for me to carry in public. I see no point to buying a really nice one because I can't really do anything with it. Everytime I carry one in public I run the risk of having it confiscated and then being sent to the juvenile deliquents' center.

Like many here at BF, I buy knives that I can carry and use. That would limit me to a sub 2" balisong here in California. Not only have I not seen such an animal, I can't think what possible use I would have for it.

I broke a lot of the old brass/aluminum balisongs that they made in the 60's. I never liked the proportions much on the balisongs. I did like a couple scandinavian models that were shorter and heftier. I haven't tried a balisong in years.

Yep. Law trouble. With good megafolders just starting to become common, it's not worth it to swing

I got on a thread awhile back that knzn started. It led me to Clay's site, then Gollnick's. I just ordered a Jag from 1SKS. Clay seemed to think it was a good beginner.

I have to say that I am anxiously awaiting the knife and am very intrigued. If nothing else, I figure my hand/eye coordination will improve, providing I leave myself at least one eye and one hand.

I suppose I will be even more into it when I go down to the Oregon show in Eugene and watch our resident experts in action. Who knows, I may end up spending a small fortune on a really good one down the road.

As for why every knife knutt isn't into them, I suspect it's the same as everything else in life. One man's poison is another man's wine... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and about 50 other sayings that mean the same thing. Just my 2 cents.

UGLY?!?!?!??!

That settles it! I am now convinced that we Balisong fanatics are actually the reincarnated souls of the people that bought the Edsel.

I was into Balisongs in the mid '80s. At that time, they were extremely popular (along with the "Rambo" type survival knives).

Tastes change though. Balisongs are cooler than Duran Duran or the A-Team, but I still can't help seeing them as a brief pop culture phenomenon. That's probably how people who lived through the '50s viewed switchblades in subsequent decades.

Chuck,

That's awesome! Did you provide Vance with the wood, or did he have some of it laying around?

BTW, mines got skeletonized Ti handles. Not as purtty as yours.

Oh, and as to the topic, Ya, why aren't all you silly people into Balisongs too?

They are illegal to pack where I live, but as long as you keep them at home, what knife is as much fun to amaze your friends with?
