Hi Guys-

I have a knife vise for sale that's just like the ones that I use. Ideally, these are used in a multi-purpose, rotating head vise... but it will work with any solid bench vise.

It's made from 2" square tubing, TIG welded to a 2" diam pipe. The internal blocks are Alder. The top block has a piece of round stock glued in place for the bolt to contact when tightened, and the bolt has a 3/4" head. It's painted with black, hammered Rustoleum and the Alder blocks are heavily waxed.

Super simple, super effective.

I never thought about selling anything like this, but it's been pointed out to me that a lot of folks don't have access to the tools needed to cut and weld something like this.... so here we go--- :)

$50 + shipping (I'm pretty sure I can fit this in a USPS medium flat rate box)

Looks like this one is sold--- Thanks le0ne! :)

Robert- thanks for asking :), but I'm not taking orders for these. I might build a handful of them sometime and post them up here, but I'm just not sure when I'll be able to get to something like that.

Thanks guys! :)

Nice tool, someone needs to make these.....I also like how your files have antler on them!

Nick,
Nice vise. I see a C Clamp attatched in a couple of the pics, are you using that to limit rotation.

Hi guys :)

The C-clamp on mine was to hold a piece of micarta up under the guard lug... it keeps me from slipping with the file and marring up the finished top side of the guard. I think I put a lot better explanation in the thread in my sig line.

I got the idea for deer & elk antler file handles from JP Moss in Woodson, TX. Most deer and elk antler is too porous for a high end knife handle, but it's still pretty to look at. :D I usually prefer a $2 wood handle on them now, just because a symmetrical handle doesn't interfere with gripping the file at a weird angle like the antler does sometimes.

Thanks guys! :)

Question:

Do you need to have the round pipe welded to the square tube? Other knife maker's vises use round tube. Couldn't you just drill a hole and weld the nut to a single length of round pipe and call it a day? Yours is a nice design but if you end up having to make a bunch of these, would the single pipe version reduce cost and speed production? I'm going to fire up my welder tomorrow to find out but I just thought I'd float the idea in case it helps.

Yes, you could.

Personally, I wouldn't want one like that for a couple reasons.

The "filler blocks" inside would need to be 1/2 rounds to achieve similar clamping pressure.

The even bigger reason--- the filler blocks would slide around (both by rotating and up/down along the length of the pipe).

The square tubing allows square/rectangular filler blocks that simply can't rotate. Also, the joint where the pipe meets the square tube acts as a stop, so the filler blocks cannot slide down beyond the end of the tube into the pipe.

It would cut down on costs a little, but it wouldn't be a good choice IMHO.

But I'm not trying to tell you not to try it for yourself. You might not have any problems with just the pipe and really like it. It's just not something I want to do. :)
