When a hankie comes in handy, or Thanks Carl (and Mr. Van)!

I have carried a clean red bandanna for years exclusively for blood. Never got used. Then I realized that I was already carrying the thing, why not use it? Use it every day now. Need to get a few US made ones.

Went to the Bahamas with the wife, 2 year old daughter, and moms a couple of years ago. While we were perusing a gift shop, my mother kept picking out little trinkets to buy me. As I am trying to be a minimalist, I kept saying no thanks. However, I realize it makes people feel good to give, so I told her to get me a red pirates bandana. She rolled her eyes and said something to the effect of "What are you going to do with this thing?" I insisted, so she bought it. Two days later, she was amazed at all the things I used it for.
An improvised bib for my daughter.
A cover for my head.
A wet, cooling pad for her neck while out in the sun.
A container to hold some sea shells.
A Napkin.
A sweatband.
My daughter even used it as a blanket for her Barbies.
Yes, I am a firm believer in the humble bandana as a very important EDC item. Not sure how I would get along with out one.

Google Cattle Kate and click on western scarves. I have a bandanna in my hip pocket and a silk scarf in every coat pocket.

Wow, those are very fine.

Honest question: can you blow your nose on silk? Or rather, what happens when you blow your nose on silk? I wouldn't think it would absorb as well as cotton...?

Feel free to answer discreetly. ;)

I carry a cotton bandanna for that sort of work. The larger silk scarf, I roll up, wrap twice around my neck and tie a square knot. Both decorative and keeps my neck warm when it's cold. Wouldn't blow my nose on the silk. BTW, you can often find nice silk scarves in the women's section of Goodwill or other thrift stores. The real cowboys call them wild rags. I have one Cattle Kate, but you can find them cheaper other places.

Good story. Runny noses are pretty annoying when you are trying to concentrate.

I love handkerchiefs! I've been carrying one everyday for five years. I only use them about every other day though. I use it mainly as a handtowel and to blow my nose, but it's been known to help grip bottles to open them and to screen smoke from my mouth and nose during bonfires. I rarely ever wear it on my head as a bandanna though.

I carry one or two bandannas every day. When it's hot, one goes on my head and I have an extra for upper respiratory emergencies. The other day I forgot the second one. My son and I were working up in our attic and the sweat started rolling down on my glasses, so I took my "used" bandanna out and tied it on my head, "doorag" style. My son, outraged, asked "Is there snot on that bandanna???"

Ja.

Ya do what ya gotta do.

A few years ago I was at a shooting match. I blew my nose on my bandanna. One of my shooting buds commented on how gross it was to put a snotty rag back in the pocket. The next time I needed to blow, I made sure I was standing near him, then performed a perfect "farmer's" blow. He was completely grossed out. I asked him...

"Guess you'd rather I used the bandanna, huh?"

'tis an old joke, what does a poor man throw on the ground that a rich man wraps in linen and puts in his pocket.

My dad always carried a handkerchief and I didn't get it until I was grown.

Funny you should say this, because just last Friday as my son and I were driving home from Asheville (he was home from college on spring break this week), he told me a story about when he was a young boy, prefaced by saying what crazy things we think as kids.

He said he couldn't wait until he got old enough to have his own handkerchief to carry in his pocket (instead of having to borrow mine), because he assumed that all adult men carry them -- part of being an adult and not a kid!

Nice thread! I started carrying a handkerchief when I got my first suit and tie job many years ago. It kept the change in my pocket and I never had nose problems at a bad time. My father and grandfathers all carried them. I also use a bandana sometimes and agree after a few washings it is a very useful item. I keep a Buff in my back pocket (the tube of microfiber cloth described w/pics earlier). All very useful and versatile. My brother carries one as well just for his glasses.

Yeah, a decently clean bandanna or hanky is incredibly useful for glasses wearers, even if you just wear sunglasses. Makes a world of difference.
