When Are Woodpeckers Awesome To Have Around? TOPS HOG 4.5 In-Use Pics

Amazing pictures. So much so I hate to bring up the knife, but it reminds me so much of the Simonich Crowfoot. Miss Rob on this forum (RIP).

Pretty cool post. We have a bunch of wood peckers around here, but I've never seen them go after pines. Around here it is the harder woods that the bugs infest and thus draw the peckers to drill holes in.

I went for a walk today while it was snowing, but it wasn't nearly as pretty here as you show in your pictures. We only had a light dusting and no ice. You inspire me to wonder around building fires. I mainly walk for health benefits and to have fun with the dog. I need to start taking my toys along and practice with them on my daily walks.

I think they will be attacking pretty much any insect infested tree. I suppose in your neck of the woods that is more commonly hardwoods, in Georgia the pine beetle keeps the woodpeckers well fed, and looks a lot here.

Great pictures! I sure need to get out for a winter hike!

Thank you! It can make for some really cool scenery.

Another cool post and great pictures Mist. Live the snow pictures.

Thanks Hawkeye, glad you enjoyed the post man.

Enjoyable pictures, thanks. I'm Not sure if Whiskey Jacks are in your area, but they will grab any camp scraps, fly up, and stuff them into a tree crack for later.

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed them. Pretty sure we have them here, also known as Gray Jays, I think that is one in an above photo.

Awesome pics!
Man...I miss the snow

Thanks man, glad you like them!

Great photo's! Gotta love snow if you reside on that side of Lake Michigan.

Looks like a Bluejay in that one shot. I've never seen one in winter where the snow flies.

I like that Tops! How long is the handle?

Thanks man! Glad you liked them! Yep, the ground has been completely blanketed in snow here since Thanksgiving day :) I'm pretty sure it's a Gray Jay, and they live year round in one spot from what I have read, and they gather food and stash it all summer long for later use. Pretty smart birds. Me too, a definite favorite so far, love the blade profile and grind, and the handle ergonomics are pretty sweet too. The over-all is 9-3/4" and a blade length of 4-3/8" so the handle is just over 5 inches.

Great pics as usual, Mist. Especially the ice-covered field. And yeah, I'm totally digging that Tops, and they usually don't appeal to me. Stay warm up there. :)

Thanks Daizee, the ice was something else, made for a interesting look to a new environment. I like this one a lot myself, it handles really well.

Small woodpeckers are not too big a problem for the trees but the big ones mean the tree is a goner ! Yours seems to be building a high rise LOL !

Yep, you should hear the amount of noise when there are three or four of them going in an area at once :)

Nicee pics.

Thank you.

what part of Mi are you in? I grew up about 15 miles away from Lansing. Very rural, but not far from "Town".

Pretty well central MI. West of Flint, East of Grand Rapids, North of Ionia, and south of Mt Pleasant :)

Nice pics, where's the FB love?

Same place as always, in my heart :) Hey just because I really like Andy's work doesn't mean I suddenly stopped liking TOPS, and just because I am carrying a TOPS doesn't mean I stopped liking Andy's work. These two knife companies are in completely different classes of knives in my opinion. I still like using my TOPS knives for wilderness experiments, and I suspect I always will. That said, I did have a Fiddleback Raptor in my pocket, however with a full-height grind on narrow 1/8 stock, with a thinly tapered tang, it was not the one I wanted to be doing rough experiments with :) Fear not, I got a new Fiddleback in 3/16 CPM154 a while back, there will be an upcoming post you might dig ;)

Thank you, glad you enjoyed them. I can see it reminding you of that knife too. That Crowfoot is a sweet looking knife!

When are woodpeckers awesome to have around?

When they're not at my house! I'll send them all to you!! :D

Great pics Mist- as usual!

I keep looking at that TOPS. The handle, blade shape, grind and size look right up my alley. Comfy handle?

Thanks man! Yes very, likely the most comfortable TOPS I own...sort of a toss up between it and the Fieldcraft, but I like the flat grind of the HOG.

I have been really excited about that Hog 4.5 knife since I saw it on the TOPS website.

It looks like a winner!

Nice pics! We have had ZERO winter here, very nice to see some winter wonderland! I also just got a TOPS HOG, very cool knife, probably my all time favorite I've tried from TOPS!
